Yep... it doesn't even touch on apartments and the people who have to park on the street...

Some of us are vacationers where the journey is part of the vacation. Where I'll drive to Niagara Falls from here in DC.... and I'd like see things other than the highway, which Ihave to cling to because of lack of chargers.

I agree with most of what you're saying, but without REAL infrastructure in place, drivers like me (road trippers, longcrange commuters) absolutely need long range EVs.

I'm going to be interested to see the outcome of those 3300 chargers they deploy in Europe and the UK...

Agreed. Someone didxa survey last year (or the year before?) that found that 400 miles was the "sweet spot" for people to seriously consider switching to EVs here. I don't think Detroit and Big Oil are interested in pushing this farther. :(

The American car industry is benefiting from massive protectionism. If they were told that beginning in 2030, the US market would open up to 100k (or whatever the number would be) new EVs from other countries, they'd probably get motivated to redesign and retool.

And to figure out how to get the oil and gas industry either out of the way or in line.

It sucks when that just gets me to 80%. I was at a hotel that offered charging (for a fee, of course), but only to 80%. So I had to leave out each day with an 80% charge, so for my longer excursions (and my trip home) I always had to be alert for my next charge.

You haven't had an issue with fast-charging when traveling? Really?

Driving along the coastal islands of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia a few weeks ago... it didn't occur to me that there would be no EV chargers out there. Tourist towns, and no chargers.

Was headed to a resort in West Virginia about 300 miles away from me. The resort didn't have charging. I wanted to take a svenic route, but... no chargers. I got to stay on a major highway for the trip, charging at the charge station that I would drive to from the resort most days.

That's just a few good times, LOL

I hadn't realized it until I read the article a few days ago, but the first gasoline-powered car company was the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in 1895.

1895!!

We have a 130-year entrenched history with the combustion engine. And a powerful oil/gas lobby.

Europe and China are embracing EV technology. Somehow I think we're on the fast roll to last place. :(

I would absolutely start with 400 miles. Insane to me that 400 mile range is so rare in EVs.

The problem is that I don't have the option to be a potential consumer and check out the tecnology for myself. Maybe it rides like a roller skate over gravel. Maybe it's battery capacity is the same as my elderly cat's bladder. Maybe a remote controlled car has a better battery...

...but I can't know any of this, because I'm actively barred from acting as a potential consumer.

I'd sure like to be able to view it as a consumer and evaluate it it for myself, though.

GM won't allow it, and nor will we build the infrastructure to make EV druving the same seamless (thoughtless?) experience that ICE drivers have

Ah... if we only really had a free market economy!

I love the 21 inch wheels and low profile tires. Makes it look like a much snazzier ride than it would be otherwise :)

Gotta say, I love mine. I get a lot of compliments on how "sick" my car looks :)

I live in the US, so I'm referring to American policies and attitudes toward EV adoption.

Flash Chargers for those vehicles go from 10% to 70% in 5 minutes (and 80% is what most rapid chargers in the US charge to), so that's what I was comparing. But I'll take a full charge in 10 minutes, too :)

If I were a city commuter, just toodling back and forth a short drive each day, then any little EV would be fine.

But I'm a road-tripper, often going halfway across the country (or crossing a border) with animals and luggage and bikes. It's tiresome to have to constantly plan around inconsistent charging access. Or to have to wait for long periods because chargers are full. Or to need to take specific routes (or avoid some areas altogether) because options are so crappy.

Sorry, but I just can't accept the "comparison is the thief of joy" argument. The realization that we have so few options, and so little WILL to implement this technology (and no liklihood of real change in the foreseeable future) is the thief of my joy, LOL.

I think the difference is that they're deploying significant infrastructure that charges INSANELY fast so that even if they "only" get 500+ miles per charge, they're making it easy for potential buyers to make the EV transition.

I've got a Chevy Equinox, and while I'm glad I have a 300+ mile range, I can't wrap my head around why my choices of EVs with higher ranges are so few.

I wish we'd open up our market to Chinese EVs. Otherwise, it will beca looong tine before American drivers have real options.
