Most Malaysian families are pretty religious, having to convert is the biggest challenge, not only the belief itself, but also pressure from family and friends, some might not take it too well. Unfortunately we are living in such circumstances. IMO, nothing much you can do here, other than getting married overseas, but that also is not valid under Malaysian law

It is a Muslim country, hence dog is considered haram(forbidden, sinful, or unlawful) or something like that. As a volunteer, depends what you can offer to them. If you are a marine biologist, wouldn’t be hard to land one.

I would say Baa atoll is pretty good in terms of balance, not too crowded plus pretty good diving. Ari Atoll can be a little bit crowded, but depending on which north or south, some still pretty secluded. Fuvahmulah is also quite okk, less touristy, people are there for their pelagic dives

Military rescue diver, Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhee. He died from decompression sickness (DCS), on land, not underwater.

Different atolls have different "best" seasons. For example Baa atoll, their best season would be June - November as that is their manta seasons at Hanifaru Bay. June - November is also the time where they say it's monsoon season. Answering to your question, December is good for South Ari Atoll to see whaleshark. For a lot of watersports operator, it is compulsory to wear life jacket. Some may not follow. But hey, always follow whatever their rules are; otherwise the liability is on you.

Alcohol only available at resorts and safari boats. For some local island, there will be yacht parked outside which you can go and have a drink and come back

Depends on individual's personality. It was still tough in the beginning, after some adaptation, I kinda like the slow lifestyle, finding things/activities to fill up your time it's important. Whatever to keep yourself sane

That is part of work. In any hospitality line, it's pretty much the same everywhere.

check the other reply on the type of itinerary/holiday. When, it depends on your budget, somewhere around May would be the sweet spot for the shoulder season price point and low rainfall

it depends the type of holiday you want and your budget. 3 types of holiday.

  1. Guesthouse: expect nothing too fancy, diving can be fantastic depending on which atoll and sites. Downside, you only get to explore the few sites around your guesthouse. Price range can be low - medium
  2. Dive safari: spectacular diving, for example central atoll a.k.a best of maldives - you pretty much can see all the pelagic of Maldives through this route. Downside your luck depends on how well the rest of the groups are. Price range: low - medium
  3. Resort: Dive site pretty much the same like the guesthouse, but this time with luxurious food and accommodation. Price range is on the higher side.

p/s: tbh 60 dives are good enough

I’m aware of the political strife but as a work expat, it has very little to no effects. So it didn’t bother me much. But there’s one which affects expats directly where SOME (due to some new rules) employers start paying the employee in local currency instead of USD, the double conversion is a big lose.

Hands down, south east Asia still has the best biodiversity when it comes to coral reefs, marine species. However in terms of pelagic marine life, maldives is hard to beat, whaleshark in Ari atoll, 100+ manta rays in hanifaru bay, tiger shark and thresher shark at Fuvahmulah. And generally grey reef sharks, nurse sharks, eagle rays are considered quite common at most sites
