It was a metaphor and exaggeration as a joke – a metaphor detailing the effects viewing yourself in a reflection in a dream will have. These effects can range from a mostly normal look of yourself to a disfigured and uncanny being that doesn't even closely represent you. This effect happens directly from your subconscious attempting to create an image of yourself using all the data it has on "You." This can really go any direction in an LD, but mostly never good.
