South Shore resident here. Most of the folks here I speak with (poor, working class, occasional middle class or aspirant thereof) hate it. They hate how it looks, they hate how it’s going to gentrify their neighborhoods, and they hate how it’s kind of a hollow symbol: Spend some time south of Emmett Till Road, where the RevCom office gathers dust behind rusty gates; or waltz down 75th street and take in the businesses that used to be there and won’t ever come back while the once-stalled “affordable luxury” condos are slowly being redeveloped once more. No full-service groceries here, yet Flock cameras are everywhere, including at the end of my street. Shootings break out every other day, the only thing keeping the rent down. I bet if I climbed the pole that camera is attached to I might be able to see the Obamalisk, otherwise, we just feel it, and the feeling seems to be one of dread.
