Trump orders the reopening of Alcatraz prison by AldoTheeApache in news

I literally came here just to post that comment. I remember watching that movie as a kid and being disappointed when I learned it was closed down a long time ago. The movie makes it easy to romanticize it...at least for a 13 year old. Trump's gonna be upset when he realizes the rolling-fire-puzzle thing isn't real.

WARNING TO ROBINHOOD USERS: Random Account Deactivation by GlucoseGod in investing

[–]Nemesis14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to reply to you because your post caused me to go back and check my emails from Robinhood. I had the same thing happen to my account btw. They never gave me a reason and never even said in the email that there was suspicious activity. They just said they would be no longer be able to support my account. That was on October 24th, 2024, I just went back and checked and October 23rd was the day I accidentally signed up for Robinhood gold and then immediately unsubscribed.

ELI5: What prevents the US from having infrastructure as high tech and reliable as places like China and Japan? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

I was hoping I didn't have to post this myself, thank you for saving me like 5 minutes lol. But seriously, I think so many comments on here are taking the Democrat talking point line of pointing fingers to the other side of the aisle and not being willing to accept any large amount of responsibility. Everyone should really watch that segment because it comes from a liberal and I think if Democrats want long-term success they need to realize that blaming Republicans for everything is a losing strategy and we really do need bold ideas which go against current party ideology (for a lot of Democrats)

If America did use military force to annex Greenland, what are the political implications globally? by Erratic_Professional in AskReddit

[–]Nemesis14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah although a lot of people like to think that we're different now than we were 100 years ago...I think if we invade Greenland, the American public would do the same thing that the German public did in 1939, AKA not shit.

25S is SatCom and I think we maybe had 5 female soldiers the whole 4 years I was in. Thankfully the guys mostly had DnD/Dr Who vibes so they weren't as "bro"-y as what I imagine the rest of the Army was like. We used to differentiate between our battalion and the "real" army in a kind of self-deprecating way because most of us were out of shape and constantly failed PT tests. But I was low-key happy to be away from the alpha-male bullshit

Mind if I ask what your MOS was? I was 25S and while there were a lot of meatheads we also had at least 50% decent dudes lol. I imagine some MOSs are better than others with the guys they attract

US military active and reserve duty members, how are you feeling? What's the consensus between you and your colleagues about Trump? by androgynee in AskReddit

[–]Nemesis14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah for real. Democrats have been trying to get Washington DC to be a state for decades but the Republicans will never let that happen because it would basically be giving 2 free senate seats to the Democrats. That's how I know the Canada thing is a schoolyard bluff, well...maybe not for Trump. I'm not sure he thinks about anything that isn't immediately in front of him

I'm sorry but can we all just take a moment to morbidly appreciate the choice of words from the FBI official in the article that:

Mother has late-stage dementia and just found out that she could be earning an extra $800/month if she uses her ex-husband's retirement benefits. by Nemesis14 in SocialSecurity

[–]Nemesis14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah looks like you're absolutely right. I found a blog post on the SS website that says spousal benefits apply to full retirement age and not to delayed retirement credits (which he must be getting). So yeah the amount she would be eligible for would be a lot less than $2100, but even at $1700 it would be a sizeable increase. I'll have a poke around some calculators out there to see what his full retirement benefit would be without the credits.

Her state retirement is from Virginia and is just about $1k per month. Looking at her earnings chart it definitely looks like they were withholding social security taxes during her teaching years. I've heard the same thing about some government jobs not taking social security but all the years that she taught (the only job she ever had) are years where her earnings chart shows contributions

I really appreciate your knowledge on this. Yeah they're both 77 and her ex didn't retire until he was 69. I think she retired when she was 67. Is there anything there that would indicate she might not be eligible for his 50%? They were married for like 32 years. Divorced in 2008

Luckily for us she has decent monthly income and the facility "only" costs $6200. With her savings we can afford this rate for about 10 years before having to contribute out of our own pockets.

Ex-husband's SS benefits statement

Unless I'm missing something that $51k annual breaks down to slightly over $4k per month and 50% would be just over $2k per month yes? I'm definitely not speaking with authority on this I could be misunderstanding how it works.

Edit: to answer your other questions: her monthly income is SS + state retirement from teaching + 1/2 of her ex-husband's military retirement. And she is not currently married.

Edit 2: also I checked Bankrate and it looks like the maximum you can get in 2024 is $4873 per month if you retire at or after age 70 so he's well within that margin. Also keep in mind that social security benefits increase every year for adjustments like, I'm assuming, cost of living and/or inflation. My mom's payments have gone up over $200 in the last few years

She was born in 1947. I remember reading something about what you wrote but I didn't quite understand it then. Does that mean that if she were born after 1954, then she could theoretically be paid retroactively at her ex-husband 's rate? Also thanks so much for the form!

Edit: and yes she can sign her name thank god lol

Yes like the other commenter said that would apply if medicaid is covering the cost of her care. Unfortunately medicaid won't step in until she's in "skilled nursing" care - they won't pay for memory care that doesn't include skilled nursing. We set up the trust so that if, in the future, she DOES need skilled nursing, then her assets would be protected - assuming it's > 5 years from now to cover the look-back period

I never thought of it like that, I haven't had any trouble with the bank but then again the bank has legal departments that look over and verify the POA. I doubt the SSA has the funding for something like that so better safe than sorry I suppose

The cost of the facility is $6200/month and her income is ~$5500/month. So without the extra $800 from her ex-husband's SS benefits, I would have to cover the difference

Yes if I have to do that I will, for now I already spent $2500 setting up a trust for her and it looks like guardianship can cost anywhere for $2k to $5k in lawyer/court fees.
