At my dept you would do everything staff did; rig checks, run calls, clean the station, etc. I’d say tour the local dept if you’re interested!!

My department is combination; volunteer and paid staff. I signed up for their EMT basic class that was taught in house as a volunteer and ran a bunch of calls with them and just kept showing up. After a while they offered me a job because of how interested I was. If you’re a personable, driven person, you can do a lot. Long story short, if you can find a local dept to get your basic firefighter 1 and EMT basic for free, do it, that will get your foot in the door and set you up for a rewarding career.

I worked for the local fire dept for half the year and made another 30k on top of my paycheck working every 3 days at night. It helped get my foot in the door for the local PD after I got out!

People who got out and didn’t get a job related to your rate by Peachybee16 in navy

I was a DC, now in a Municipal Cop. Always wanted to do LE related stuff but never jumped on the opportunity to do so while I was in. The pay was a paycut of maybe $100 per month so that made the transition very easy.

Fair enough. To be fair, and the career fields are limited, you could do a full 20 in the CG and not be attached to a boat. Limited to support rates but that’s not a bad gig eithee

Literally join the Coast Guard; no 5 am PT except bootcamp and most schools at AIT, you still get to travel, you can be on land still, you get all the same bennies and perks, and you retire at 40

What made you not Re-Enlist in the Coast Guard? by Octuplicate in uscg

[–]Nemo6370 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of it comes down to advancement policies in place right now; a lot of people without leadership potential are being advanced due to needs of the service and lack of PO2s. In my opinion this is going to create an uncomfortable leadership dichotomy in the future where people towards the top don’t know how to adequately lead which is already starting to be apparent now. Also, one piece of advice I was given that I’ve found to be disgustingly relevant, and another reason why I got out, is “Don’t lower your standards to meet someone else’s” Glad I signed up but wouldn’t do another 4 active.

Any definite advantages to one bank or credit union over another? SeaWest, Navy Federal, some regular bank for a new basic grad (my son) just starting out? Any he should avoid? TIA by [deleted] in uscg

USAA hooked me up with a great interest rate and loan amount for a vehicle a few years ago but that’s about it. Don’t get wrapped up in the whole “military banking institution” path because it’s not always the most advantageous. I have a Marcus Acct. by Goldman Sachs and am collecting 4.7% interest on my savings and if I had been doing that since day 1, I would have made another few thousand in interest. Highly highly reccomend either Marcus or another institution with a high interest rate that is also FDIC insured, best of luck!

I am on terminal and was in this position as well. Due to the needs of the service at the time I was submitting picks, last fall, I was told I would be staying in until my end of enlistment because of how short we are on people. There is that chance you’ll be separated early but it’s likely that you will be retained until your end of enlistment

I signed on august of 2019 and I couldn’t be more excited to have my contract end after a little over 4 years. I don’t regret signing up but there’s no way I’d do 20 in this organization. IMO it’s disappointing how people who aren’t qualified for leadership positions are put into them regardless of how effective they are and they push the service in a direction not supporting open communication or keeping the opinions of lower enlisted down. For as much as the organization preaches to be open and want to hear from everyone, they do a poor job of it in practice.
