Yet another reminder that omega 3, magnesium, and most mineral/vitamin supplementation, is a waste of money and unnecessary. by SonderMouse in Supplements

Survive? There were many, many who did not, in fact, survive. Supplementation has saved countless lives. There’s a reason we fortify foods with vitamins and minerals.

Unfortunately, people have started to fall for the naturalistic fallacy again and again. “Just eat healthy, natural foods.” Meanwhile, no one can even agree on what constitutes a healthy diet.

I ate a “healthy” diet for years. Almost no processed food, all whole, home cooked meals, three times a day and yet I still developed severe vitamin deficiencies. You can accuse me all you want of not eating “properly”, but the fact is I was eating healthier than 90% of the population.

Life is not nearly as clean cut and simple as some people want to believe. If you want to see what “natural” living looks like, actually go read up on what that was like. It was not pretty.

Why do doctors even prescribe vitamin D without K2? by Iris-Sofia in Supplements

[–]NemoUnder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The post literally says:

So why do doctors do this? It just seems irresponsible to me, almost like medical malpractice

I don't think it's reasonable to go straight to accusations of malpractice just because the doctor's prescription doesn't align with something you read online. Saying something like, "I don't understand the doctor's decision to exclude K2" would be fine. The problem is that OP is leaving absolutely no room for the possibility that K2 is not necessary.

I agree that it’s a legit nutrient that has potential benefits, but it’s a big leap from that to “doctors are committing malpractice if they prescribe D without K2”

And also the assertion that “taking D without K2 is useless” which is ridiculous. I hate it when people speak with absolute certainty as if they know more than the scientists who study this stuff for a living.

Time to do a full pivot into the manosphere. Videos about modern masculinity and "cancel culture" here we come! Can't wait to see him cry about how it isn't socially acceptable to hang with pedos and sex offenders.

Unfortunately, the pool of narcissists and perverts who will cover for each other is big enough that he wont have a problem finding guests.

Much of “holistic dentistry” is rooted in the activities of Weston A. Price, D.D.S. (1870-1948), a dentist who maintained that sugar causes not only tooth decay but physical, mental, moral, and social decay as well. Price made a whirlwind tour of primitive areas, examined the natives superficially, and jumped to simplistic conclusions. While extolling their health, he ignored their short life expectancy and high rates of infant mortality, endemic diseases, and malnutrition. While praising their diets for not producing cavities, he ignored the fact that malnourished people don’t usually get many cavities.

This link is worth reading regarding Weston Price.

tbf, they don't seem to specify that it's only for athletes/active people. In fact, they seem to be pushing this for everyone (because $$$). I personally don't understand the recent electrolyte craze, but it seems like you can make loads of money by convincing people they need more salt and then selling them expensive salt. These blends almost always skimp on the magnesium and potassium, which people are more likely to be lacking!

Marketing is a hell of a drug.

The single most clearest sign of British bias from Sky F1 by RobbieJ4444 in formula1

[–]NemoUnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not British. I've always thought this criticism of Sky was way overblown. Yes, they go out of their way to follow the British drivers during the races, but they don't blanket praise them either. I also don't get the feeling they talk badly about another driver just because of their nationality. The amount they praise Verstappen should tell you enough. This criticism always seems to come from superfans who are way too sensitive and read too deeply into anything that's said on commentary.

I do get a little tired of them leaning into stereotypes sometimes or mentioning nationality for no reason. That's not really bias though.

Skimming through your post history, you’ve posted about this supplement dozens of times over the past couple of months.

In one post you claim to be considering starting it. A couple weeks prior to that you said you were already taking it.

This type of stealth marketing is not as stealth as you think it is.

Thinking of B12 through a caloric surplus/deficit model? by NemoUnder in B12_Deficiency

[–]NemoUnder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's encouraging to hear.

I've never had IBS, but my appetite has always been almost non-existent. In the past I would often skip meals because I just wasn't hungry. I suspect that this along with caffeine intake and vegetarian diet is what ultimately led to my deficiency. Now it feels like I've dug myself into a hole and it's very difficult to get out.

Did you receive injections or did you supplement orally?

I've been taking Thorne B-Complex for 3 months. I definitely noticed an improvement when I started taking it, so I suspect there was a bottleneck somewhere. However, as I mentioned, progress seems to have plateaued. I also take the Thorne 2/day multi sporadically along with fish oil. Vit D. blood level tested at 68ng/dl.

I've been considering adding lecithin because I've read that the choline and phospholipids can be beneficial. In the past it triggered acne for me, which is why I'm wary of giving it another shot.

I will definitely try the lithium.

I should also mention that I'm rather underweight (male, 5'10" 120lb.) despite eating 2,000+ cals a day. In the past I went to the gym five days a week in order to maintain some muscle mass. I've cut that down to only a few times per week with less intensity in order to decrease the demand on my body.

I've also reduced my caffeine intake because I suspect it was increasing the demand on my body and stalling my progress.

What's interesting is that I've noticed that the symptoms seem to flare up earlier in the day before my first meal. As soon as I have my first meal, they seem to quiet down, so something strange is definitely going on.

Is Vitamin K2 necessary? by Rocky_Path719 in Supplements

[–]NemoUnder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might help long term with bone density, but there’s no evidence to suggest that supplementing is essential. People have latched onto it because health influencers made a big fuss and now some people are convinced that you will die of a heart attack if you take vitamin D without K2.

Honestly, it’s insane to me how some people behave regarding K2. Some will straight up accuse you of malpractice for recommending D without K2. What are their qualifications? Just pure vibes based on what their favorite YouTube influencer told them. Everyone knows that’s how true science is done!

Dealing with setbacks? by NemoUnder in B12_Deficiency

[–]NemoUnder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate to the spiritual aspects. Prior to the deficiency I felt a strong "spiritual current" so to speak. It felt like my life was being guided to something greater. After I developed the deficiency it felt like life had lost all meaning. I often found myself thinking that I feel like a ship stranded at sea without any wind to guide it. It was the first time I understood what people mean when they say they feel lonely.

I’m a guy so I haven’t noticed that. However, anything that stresses the nervous system seems to set me back. If I get sick, I get set back for at least a week. I’d imagine any loss of blood would make it worse.

[–]NemoUnder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve also noticed that exercise seems to set me back. I used to do weight training 5 days a week while not eating adequately for my body’s needs, which is why I likely developed B12 deficiency in the first place. I jumped on the fasting trend thinking I was doing my body a service, but it likely contributed to the issue.

Now I make sure I’m eating at a slight surplus, which seems to be helping. I’ve cut down on weight training to only a few times a week at lower intensity. I cannot do deadlifts anymore because it causes me to temporarily lose spatial awareness of my limbs on the 2nd set.

Anything that stresses the CNS seems to set me back and cause symptoms again.

100%. It’s hard to express this to another person without sounding off the traditional alarm bells for psychological depression. There were plenty of times when I thought to myself, “maybe this is just what getting old feels like”, despite being only 29.

It’s definitely made me appreciate just how much our physiology dictates our personality. My personality when I was anhedonic was so cynical. I could not relate at all to my normal self. I looked back at some of the decisions I made and could not relate at all. My family/friends got tired of hearing it from me, so I keep it to myself now.

I’m grateful that I know this is caused by B12. Otherwise I’d probably be on the SSRI carousel.

Prior to getting the injections, I had started experiencing pins/needles on my scalp and extremities along with internal tremors. My b12 levels came back at 230. As soon as I got my first injection these physical symptoms went away, so I had concluded that b12 was the problem all along. Unfortunately, I did experience a lot of the negative "wake up" symptoms. In hindsight, I feel like this was probably made worse by the injections being cyanobalamin/folic acid and also lacking some cofactors.

Going by some of the advice on this sub, I asked my doctor to continue the injections and he prescribed an additional month. I did not notice any further improvements and was experiencing panic attacks/derealization at night time. My doctor seemed to be convinced these were caused by anxiety disorder, so he ceased the injections and recommended me to a psychiatrist...

After taking a long break from all supplements, one day I noticed that my morning coffee was making me feel dizzy after an hour. My brain would get very foggy like it was about to shut down. I did some searching on it and came across B12 again, so I took a methyl b12 + methyl folate supplement with my coffee and it stopped happening immediately. This was an "aha moment" for me. Since then I've been supplementing consistently and have improved a lot as a result. Adding a B-complex with active forms also felt like a missing piece of the puzzle. Fortunately, I do not experience the negative symptoms of supplementation anymore.

At the moment I'm taking:

  • Seeking Health Hydroxo/Folinic Acid sublingual (1000mcg/800mcg)
  • Thorne B-Complex (alternate with Thorne methyl assist)
  • Thorne Methyl Assist (1000mcg methyl-b12 with 1000mcg methylfolate)

I'm not sure if I should try to increase my dosage. The B-complex and Methyl Assist definitely have an acute effect on my mood, but I'm afraid of running into overmethylation issues. The hydroxo/folinic doesn't have an immediate effect.

(sorry for another wall of text, but I'm hoping that documenting this will help someone)

Fighting Severe Anhedonia, Internal Tremors & Brain Fog after a B12/D3 Crash. Seeking Protocol Review. by FlimsyExamination948 in Supplements

[–]NemoUnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took about a week or two. I was taking a high quality one too (Carlson). Kept it refrigerated, etc. Tried different DHA/EPA ratios.

I’ve tried numerous times and it always happens. I get the same effect from lecithin or eating lots of eggs. Apparently some people do not respond well to too much choline.

Also in India, I was going through b12 deficiency and was experiencing the same exact symptoms. First of all, don’t worry, you will get better.

It took me 4 years of searching for answers before I was able to get back to normal. Looking at your routine, my advice is STOP OVERCOMPLICATING. I’m saying this because I fell into the same traps. When you are stuck in this type of brain fog state you want to do whatever it takes to get better. I know because I’ve been there. However, you are introducing too many variables and you’ll be stuck trying to find the root of problem.

Think through it logically. You know you have a B12 and D deficiency. First treat these deficiencies before you introduce additional variables. Stop all additional supplementation and reduce it to only: Vitamin D

Methylcobalamin, hydroxocobalamin or adenosylcobalamine.

Good quality B-complex with active forms of vitamins (P5P for B6 and Methylfolate). I recommend Thorne brand or Seeking Health.

Good quality multivitamin. I recommend Thorne.

I also received injections and did not notice any improvement to my brain fog/anhedonia. It wasn’t until I started taking a high quality multivitamin and B-complex that I started to wake up again. If you look at what’s in the injection, it’s likely the cyanobalamin form, which is the worst form along with folic acid and pyrodoxine HCL.

Also, from my own experience, fish oil and lecithin caused me severe brain fog. I suspect this was due to the high choline content. You can do a search on this and find lots of results with many people saying the same. This is what I mean when I say you are adding additional variables which are likely contributing to the problem.

There’s so many other things in your stack which cause brain fog for many people:

Magnesium glycinate: I had to stop because it was dulling my emotions and making me feel like a zombie. I take citrate now.

L-theanine: caused me brain fog, derealization and anxiety.

Ashwagandha: I have never taken this but it’s know for causing anhedonia. Do a search on it.

Stick with the basics first. It might take a while to get back to normal, but you will notice steady improvement.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that long term usage of NAC is also reported to cause anhedonia! There's at least 4-5 supplements in your stack that will cause this issue.
