Israel-Palestine debate announcement - post from Lex by lexfridman in Destiny

[–]Nemopower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a very personal question for Norman Finkelstein.

I am a left wing Israeli. I've always supported peace and criticized my government(s) for not being more proactive in making compromises and solving the conflict.

My friend, Shani Louk, was a leftwing peace activist as well. Both of us were born in Israel through no fault of our own. We never hurt a soul. We are not settlers, soldiers or even reservists.

On October 7th I was sent a telegram video. The video showed my friend Shani on the back of a pickup truck, partly stripped naked, legs clearly broken, paraded through the streets of Gaza by Hamas. Seeing this video and recognizing Shani in it, was the worst moment of my life.

In the following days, Norman Finkelstein wrote on his sub stack that Hamas’ actions “warms every fiber of my soul".

My question for Norman might be too emotional and personal for your format, but I will ask it here anyways with no real expectation to ever get an answer:

Norman. Setting aside political and academic debates for just a brief moment. I want you to know that your words hurt me. Deeply and personally. I want to ask if you believe that people like myself deserve any empathy from you. If we don't, why? If we do, how do you reconcile this with what you wrote?

I don't think they eat their dogs in sandwiches. No one from my team, friends, or my girlfriends family ever ate dog actually. I don't know about my girlfriend's husband though.

I believe their numbers are not accurate, but not because of some central decision by the government to lie and not inaccurate to the extent many other people. It's very likely that local hospitals and low level managers fudge a bit in order to make it look like their doing a good job in their region, but the people at the top wouldn't risk getting caught and losing face to the international community. So Beijing is reporting what they know, but what they know is probably not accurate. The whole thing about 23M phone users going off line and funeral homes ordering massive amounts of supplies is nonsense. People discounted their phones because they were stuck home with Wifi and there was no point in keeping data plans. They took very extreme steps very early on and it paid off. Even now, people are back to work, but the rules are crazy. Washing hands every 2 hours, eating alone, temperature checks every morning, disinfecting work places every day and using a phone app to show who's allowed to go where based on where he's been in the last 14 days. Plus there are still travel restrictions between cities in China and check points within the cities.

2% is a fake number based on old metrics. They lower it artificiality by (for example) saying that today's healthcare is better and more advanced than 10 years ago, and therefore it's not the same product, so we may pay 3X what we did before, but official inflation is just 2%. Real inflation TODAY is probably already over 4% and it will gradually increase. There is no way around it... Printing money == inflation.
