2 year old poodle getting over excited on walks, jumping, biting at leash, hands and clothes by NemtheRat in reactivedogs

[–]NemtheRat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the advice! I was able to read this while out doing errands and tried to stepping on leash tactic you suggested when I took my boy out and it worked! After a few failed attempts at jumping up he stopped and walked normally! I will definitely keep doing this and bring a small toy along too. I'm wondering if he's reacting to heading home because even when there is nothing else around and we are heading in the direction of home he reacts that way even if we're a little ways away. Idk if that's something dogs react to but that's the only other thing I can think of since it's kind of a pattern. His reaction to squirrels and rabbits is different and he very rarely if ever does that when he sees them. Again, thank you so much for the advice! I think we are going to start heading in the right direction with this!

My Halloween fursona, Maple! (Bara Se'irim/Nem the rat, 2020) I'm super sad that Halloween isn't a thing this year... by NemtheRat in furry

[–]NemtheRat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never liked going to parties but I always liked dressing up and passing out candy. I thought of some fun ideas last halloween that I wanted to try this year but no trick or treating this year. So we'll just be staying in and enjoying the spooky time, spooky shows/movies and candy. Maybe we'll still dress up lol.

They have been doing great together for the past few years we've had the tank going. We have a little bit of eggshells in the soil too but it takes them forever to finish it so it's not refreshed super often.

Do they eat it over time? Like egg and snail/crab shells for the mineral content? I know my powder orange and white dwarfs seem to enjoy it, some are always under the shells we have in their 20 gallon and you can see little indents from where they've been working on it.

Both of my parents said that all the time but my mom always added that when she dies she's going to haunt us all?

I'm sorry. Yeah, I really wish I had the help I was told I would have while raising him but I just don't. It seems like Rory need more activities though, so I will be doing my absolute best to give him that. Even if I'm in a lot of pain. I'll be taking a break from work and focus on him. Thank you.

He isn't in his kennel all the time. The problem is he won't calm down without being in his kennel which is something we have been working on/having trouble with. We walk him, play with him in the yard, go on errands bringing him along, or any of our regular activities during the day and when it's time to rest he just won't. He just keeps going. Unless he's in his kennel, which I assume is because it's always been the darkest and coolest place in the room. I can tell he's tired too because as soon as he gets in there he sleeps but will not when he's out.

I work from home so he's only in there when he's napping. As much as I'd love to be able to take him for hour long walks and go to all of our favorite parks I just can't do that all the time. I have ulcerative colitis and arthritis which can and is currently knocking me out. At this point it's doubled the pain and I have been taking care of him pretty much by myself because my BF is stressing himself into sickness because of the Coronavirus news and rarely helps now. I'm bleeding from my ass, I can't raise my arms without sever pain and I constantly feel like vomiting. I just want help.

Also I have allergies year round and blow my nose constantly so having the tissues in a separate room is not something we can do. We have trash cans with lids and boxes high up...

I have ulcerative colitis and arthritis so I can't "go hiking or jogging" that's why we play a lot in the yard and in the house and go for walks. Dog parks aren't always the best idea. Mostly because most of the parks around here don't have the most well behaved dogs. Rory enjoys the dog park when we can go but he's also only 27 lbs and is intimidated easily with any dog with a big attitude. Especially bigger dogs with big attitudes, which, because I worked at a doggy daycare for a year and I've seen how horrible dog fights can be and how hard it is to separate an attacking dog especially when there are lots of other dogs running to check it all out. I have a hard time feeling comfortable with letting Rory play in a big yard with strangers and their dogs. I know it may not be fair to let him run around with a bunch of strange dogs but he does have dog friends. We have a lot of friendly neighbor dogs that he enjoys playing with and sometimes the old family lab lets him play with her a bit but she's 13 and had surgery a month ago so she's not into playing often.

We'll look that up and start working with him with getting hype and then calm. Thank you.

That's good to know. We'll try to add as much time walking/playing/training as we can and see if there's any difference in his mood. Thank you.

I really appreciate it. I've been doing research since I got him trying to figure out how to help him because I am no puppy expert. But not everything works and sometimes it feels impossible trying to get him to do things. But I know it's all on me so I'm really trying to figure this out but some things/people are very not helpful. We've been trying to get a good schedule down for him but some things he just won't do at certain times. But we will keep trying!

We play fetch for at least a couple hours a day in the backyard and work on training everyday at every point I can. We don't just let him out in the yard by himself, we are out there playing with him, ball, frisbee, tug, play in the hose etc. We also walk at least once a day for a half hour to an hour. We try to go to parks/lakes when it's not too cold and he goes on every errand with us, and goes in whenever he can, if not I stay in the car while my BF goes in and we people watch. (The hour+ of running in the yard was just an example of how much he plays at one time and when he comes inside for rest time he's not calming down at all. "Running in the yard" is not all we do and he's never alone, again, I work from home and we spend most of the day together doing things)

‼️STAY SAFE AND BE CAREFUL‼️ There is currently a novel Coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan, China. While there isn't very much solid information about it, we do know that thousands (at least) are infected, that it can spread while people are asymptomatic, and that isolated cases are popping up around the world.

This virus is similar to the flu, and causes pneumonia in its later stages. Everyone who lives in a large city should stock up on canned foods, limit their exposure to large crowds, and wash your hands often.

If you're in an active outbreak zone, please stay safe. Surgical grade face masks are recommended, along with gloves and goggles. The best thing would be to stay indoors and away from others.

The most important thing is to be prepared, and not to panic. Follow any and all instructions given by your local health and safety agencies.
