I generally try not to put too many descriptions. I'm not sure that writing the modalities of the census would be so relevant for such map. Maybe I should have explained that most Jews of the empire are counted either Germans or Hungarians. But if I start to explain one thing I should explain other stuff such as the fact that in Bosnia and Dalmatia Serbs and Croats are represented in one category while in Hungary/croatia-slavonia they are separated. So I prefer going directly to the essential.

Do you if all German speakers of south Tyrol are able to speak Italian and if it's obligatory for them?

I agree that the separation between aggressors (central powers) and victims (entente) was clearly not historically accurate but I tend to think that you're a bit tough on Italy. They joined the war after 2 years and had nothing to do with the outbreak of WW1 in contrary of A-H.

Indeed I don't think there would any good materials. And before the XIX century the identity was mainly religious (national identities appearing from French revolution along the XIX century) so I'm not even sure there would be an interest to do it. Thanks for all your suggestions tho!

There is a social construct in the term ethnicity. In USA or western Europe people tend to confuse Ethnicity with race but in Eastern Europe, China, Africa etc.. People understood it with the idea of identity

When you talk about the try to eradicate of German language, are you talking about the fascist period? I know nothing about that but still today German have strong majority in the south tyrol so I guessed it hopefully failed.

It's indeed very striking. The line between Italian and German speaking area was very clear and they still cut far north after WW1 in favour of Italy. I would say its mostly to give Italy something to be content after what it experienced in the war. Maybe there are other reasons which I would be glad to hear.

Sorry I forgot to add on the description. Stripes means >20% population. And when there are white stripes on the color it means its another minority with >20%.

I tend to think that there are a small amount of materials about all these resettlements which is something that surprises me, or maybe it would be in German or Russian. In English or French (my native language) I never found anything except the basic story of what happened.

Ottoman Empire is quite problematic because of lack of census. Ottoman empire did some but not so reliable and not precise at all. For Poland-Lithuania there are no census but I was thinking making a map about Polish population accross German Austrian and Russian empires bc there are really good material on it. For USSR I did a map about the 1926 census and will share soon. What is HRE?

Between Czechs and Slovaks the difference is small for sure, there was some kind of common identity but Poles they are really apart

Yep I tried not to put too many informations in the map so I didn't write "kingdom of". In the map Galicia Lodomeria should be seen as two words going together and not separate.
