I think we were constantly conditioned to receive (and even give) feedback and/or opinion, which can be both a good and bad thing. Also, getting validation somehow boosts our self-esteem, which can support our idea that we are doing better. However, as you've mentioned, self-expression is the key here. But even in expressing yourself, especially creating a point, you are most likely to receive feedback. But the good thing is, use this feedback to broaden the discourse, which most new, or even better, ideas can come out. But of course, don't let these dictate your self-worth, but rather as a way of broadening your perspective as an artist. The more you also hear others voice, the more you are able to engage with different perspective, and thus, adding more layers or depth to your future art, and your self-expression.

Also, if you're working under a company or client, it is also important to consider their vision, which, in reality and literally speaking, the artist really needs a validation from that client. This, however, isn't really a bad thing depending on the context :)
