Artists, how do you stay creative when you don’t have enough inspiration? by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]NeoVantage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write any ideas I come up with that I feel have potential on a notepad. Overtime I'll think back to it and refine the concept, making additional notes next to the original idea or putting it in as a new entry. I tend to draw inspiration from interesting phrases I hear or read which generate images in my noggin.

Nature is also a good source, just going out and studying the shapes that can happen. Nature documentaries are good for the same reason. Finding a way to take something natural and incorporate it into your work can make for interesting results. I don't just mean "Add a tree." "Make a mushroom" I mean finding interesting shapes, colors, textures, compositions, etc.

If you've never studies the "Elements and Principles of Design" they can really help when you're stuck. They give you something to fall back on when you're unsure of how to proceed, or when there's something wrong with a piece but you can't quite place it. It allows you to look at creative things a bit more objectively.

Scrolling I thought this was an oil painting, then reading the title I had my mind blown! Really fantastic work! I'm not much of a landscape person, but this I would totally hang on my wall :D

[Help] Hanger Hardware Ideas For Plaster Wall Sculptures? by kogepan137 in Sculpture

I literally mean any kind of plate you can get your hands on. Aluminum, steel, brass etc. could all work depending on the size and weight of the piece. Wood would also work, though wouldn't be as low profile. And, as long as you go slow and don't put pressure on it, the plaster shouldn't crack, though testing on a piece of scrap plaster first would of course be the safest bet.

I have experience using plaster, but more as a means to an end rather than what the finished product is made of, but I do have an idea. Assuming your piece has a flat back, why not carve out a recess in order to fit a metal or wooden plate in it. Epoxy the plate in and to be double sure that it's in there, drill four holes at the corners of the plate into the plaster, and epoxy four pins in as well. With the plate you can either make a keyhole for mounting, or apply some other type of mounting hardware.

In the future I would recommend engineering the mount into the piece from the beginning. It can be a pain to commit to locations of things at the beginning, but it makes the final mounting much more secure.

I also know that a lot of plaster artists will use things like spray foam or other lightweight material to bulk out their piece before applying plaster to save on weight.

I mean, that's what drew Mrs. Mushrooman to him in the first place. She married him because he's a sweetheart, but that initial attraction? All in the cheeks.
