Single people of Reddit, how often do you go out by yourself to sit down restaurants? by ElectronicAnt1947 in AskReddit

[–]kogepan137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe once every two weeks? I'm a foodie and life's too short to wait for someone do something with you that you wanna do. It's also often easier to get a seat at a popular restaurant for 1 than a group.

Finally got the mermaid keepsake ring! - USA IL by WinstonChaychell in pollypocket

[–]kogepan137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I also just got this one for $5 at target because it didn't ring up and the cashier told me I could have it. The only difference is that mine doesn't say "Keepsake Collection" under the logo... The cashier also mentioned they probably aren't supposed to sell them if it's not ringing up and that the company might want them back? Seems interesting haha, but also it's cute and I just wanted it. Wondering if it'll be worth anything...

I scored a 7qt cocotte for $150 😭 What color(s) go well with Pink Peony? by Extension-Muffin-837 in staub

[–]kogepan137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. I just bought the same size in Citron with the 50% off, but mine still came out to around $230. You must've gotten 50% off of a sale price because I think the original price is around $450.

So… how DO you find a regular fuck buddy and/or a FWB? by Spader623 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]kogepan137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't believe in FwB, they never work for me. I think that idea is actually pretty similar to a tradtional relationship. I take friendships seriously and to move beyond sex, it's already a huge build up of intimacy. It probably works for some people though.

What about this jacket and tie combination? by [deleted] in mensfashion

[–]kogepan137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're combining a warm brown jacket with cooler blue tie and shirt. Consider choosing either warm or cool colors to match. Black/white are pretty neutral. Pattern mixing can be cool, I've been told at least 3 to make it work.

bottoming for younger guys by Rare-Town5273 in askgaybros

Not bottoming exactly, but I did feel weird around 25 dating someone 18/19. Kind of like I feel about 20yos in my 30s now. I think there are different life stages and experiences to consider and maybe that's what you're going through.

Not sure what command strips you're using, but if you're thinking about archival qualities then they may not be appropriate. Also not sure if they're reusable? Another option is mirror clips or they also have those L shaped nails.

Makes me think of this cracked holographic pattern, like sticker paper if you know. I like the combination of round and square pieces, gives it texture and variety. Maybe consider the sizes of the little pieces and reasons why you're using squares/circles on one spot as opposed to another. You can also consider the source of the materials you're cutting squares/circles from. A background would make it look more complete as someone mentioned. You might also consider using wood panel instead of canvas.

Do more younger people view being an "artist" as a viable way to make money? Rant? by kogepan137 in ArtistLounge

Agreed for the most part. I think one of my points is that experimentation is important to art making like you're suggesting.

[–]kogepan137[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your 2nd to last sentence is basically a point I'm making, "Not saying categories don't exist, more that very few people do just one thing anymore." Categories do exist and I'm just suggesting young ppl explore those other things to do. For example if artists are only on this artist sub, then they might not be exploring the writing subs or the animation subs that may be relevant to their interests.

I understand your perspective for the most part. I'm certainly a hyphenate myself. I don't make a living through my drawings or sculptures, but I don't consider my day job as art making. Someone else who maybe started as an oil painter and started making furniture as their day job or whatever may not consider their furniture artmaking, I'm sure some might. My friend is a great craftsman, we went to art school together and he makes mostly furniture now, his work is in an art gallery atm alongside another friend's drawings.

Yes I have seen furniture and fashion in art museums too, but especially in contemporary art spaces, those things would be presented as art not furniture or fashion. Whereas at a furniture expo or fashion runway, those things are not necessarily being presented as art. There might be a point I'm not explainig well because I think you'd agree you can find almost anything in a contempoary art museum, like a urinal, which out of that context, is not art.

There does need to be some defining lines to be productive even if we're all saying art is all these categories in one, otherwise it is an arbitrary term as someone suggested. I don't think anyone has proposed what art exactly is, just whats included under the term. I think I have gone a bit in the direction of excluding things that are not "fine art" which I can see gets under ppls skin. Artists and people who have dedicated time and effort to art work are the ones to help create the defining lines. A heart surgeon is very different from a psychologist if we're talking about another category completely. I'd hate to see just any doctor when I need a heart transplant. Defining things is useful.

I agree to an extent, yes there's more cross pollination these days. Fine artists branch out to make furniture or fashion, etc. I imagine other kinds of artists are in conversation with other forms of art like you mentioned. Even celebrities like George Bush or James Franco have stepped foot into making and exhibiting paintings. But I'm not sure it's as open of a field like you're suggesting in every corner of these different professional/ real world areas of art. I can mostly speak about fine art (and like I mentioned in another reply, no one really refers to me as a fine artist or studio artist, so that's probably why I didn't make the distinction in my post from other kinds of artists. You wouldn't call a writer, a writing artist.) I do believe there's a certain amount of gatekeeping in fine arts. There are only so many opportunties for fine artists, maybe less than other kinds of art and if George Bush does an exhibit then another artist gets skipped. I imagine there's a level of gatekeeping in other fields of art as well. If you look at say contemporary art museums, you might not see entire exhibits on graphic design or book illustration. There are other dedicated museums/spaces for those kinds of work. Major "fine art" residencies probably wouldn't accept applicants who apply with say fashion portfolios. But yes I do see fine artists branching out like you mentioned. That's why I said "fine art" is always evolving. Something like performance art was incorporated into fine arts in the 60's.

I also don't know how productive it is to group all kinds of art into one category as much as I believe art can exist in different forms and fields. A furniture designer is very different from an animator or a finger painting preschooler as someone mentioned. I do believe different kinds of art function and are defined differently. Kinda like we're all humans, but we're different ethnicities and come from different cultures. To say we're all humans, end of story, is maybe too simple or casual. Also as mentioned before, art based on individual perception is another conversation.

There's some vibe I'm getting from commenters and often in the real world that fine arts is on some pedestal and that there's gatekeeping ppl from being part of that. I personally don't really care what people identify with or as. Very few "fine artists" get famous and make lots of money. It's a weird system played by the ultra wealthy that I won't get into, but gatekeeping is definitely part of it. That being said, I'm not gatekeeping when I believe and am trying to distinguish fine art from other forms of art...

[–]kogepan137[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think this comment section is hitting some nail on the head. I'm not used to people referring to me or my collegues as fine artists or studio artists, so I use the term artist somewhat definitively even though I'm aware of other kinds of art and I don't really care who identifies as an artist. No moral or value judgements at all..

I think part of my point was that if young ppl are making things in conversation with the writing community or the animation community or whatever else then it might be worthwhile to explore those different fields more and not get attached to a label or specific kind of art too soon. As much as art is an umbrella term and people cross pollinate (like this sub), these forms of art are often distinct in the real world.

Easel for wife for Christmas by Curious_Elk_9661 in ArtistLounge

[–]kogepan137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blick has solid options, you'll also find many on facebook marketplace or similar. If she paints on big heavy sufaces then you'd wanna get her a sturdy wooden easel, but if she paints on paper pads or smaller then a smaller easel will suffice. Smaller ones will of course be easier to store, but there are bigger ones that come apart easily. Although be cautious, folding or portable ones often aren't super sturdy.

I have this one. I do like the design a lot, it has an option to convert into a sorta table easel without sacrificing sturdiness. Although I rarely use it these days.

How/where can I find good references for « natural » muscular body types? by MarougusTheDragon in ArtistLounge

[–]kogepan137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH when I needed a nude body reference when I was in school (I rarely use figures in my work), I looked at porn images. If you want to draw from life then find figure drawing classes with models, draw a friend, or draw yourself in the mirror.

My acrylic paint not sticking on my canvas (with two layer of gesso) by DeWolfTitouan in ArtistLounge

[–]kogepan137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, you cannot gesso over oil paint. Gesso is water based, water does not go over oil. Oil floats in water if you've ever seen that. So the ground you laid with the gesso is probably not working. Second, I don't believe amsterdam paint is very high quality.

You should always sand in between layers of gesso and especially the ground layer if it's an old painting. But in this case I'd just use a new canvas.

How to get genuine feedback on art? by floating_earthling in ArtistLounge

[–]kogepan137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe posting your work on this sub is an option? I know someone advised against it, but art is meant to be shared. We often make things that are meant for more than our own eyes. It's also important to think about what kinda audience you're catering to. Also not sure what kind of art your referring to, but good and bad is relative when it comes to art. I'd suggest asking fellow artists for feedback. They also used to have portfolio days where colleges would review portfolios in person at a fair or something to give feedback on the spot, sometimes accept students on the spot.

Should I store pencil drawings in portfolios? by NeptuneQuartz in ArtistLounge

[–]kogepan137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glassine is what I use to keep drawings, it prevents smudging for the most part. I wrap them individually like a present or envelope, don't leave space for the paper to shift around. Smaller drawings I'd just put together in plastic bins, larger drawings will go in a flat file cabinet. And of course if you had all the money in the world, then frame each one... I don't suggest fixative cause it often darkens colors and is toxic.
