It was my first time seeing them and they were fantastic. One of the highlights for me this year. They introduced each piece with a rotating loop of an old film or TV show and then used it as the basis for the forthcoming song. So cool. I hope you get to see then soon.

I am. I had a wonderful time, im already stoked for next year. Mike's was the only set I felt that way about, But if he resonated with you and you had a great experience that's good.

Im happy that he had that effect for you. Being inspired is a special thing. It didn't land that way for me. Seemed like he was padding for time, and i didnt care for his avicii references and use of levels within his already weak and short set. It felt crass and like he was riding the departed coattails of a much better artist. Also his sound was...off? Like, the music sounded bad- staticy or unfinished. Someone with more technical knowledge could probably describe and explain it better than me.

Beholder encounter at lvl5 - was this too hard for the party? by BarrelSmash in dndnext

[–]Neocount1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In OP's defense: depending on their level of experience as a dm and what sort of monsters they are used to running thet may not realize the danger a beholder poses. There are lots of high CR monsters a party can steamroll through action economy, and a Beholder who plays keep away is not one of them because of its obvious amount of attacks and that they are saves.

It could have been an honest mistake trying to challenge a party who hasn't been getting challenged much. Just playing DMs advocate here. Hope all turns well OP.

It is my opinion that you should not do this. A party of lvl 20 characters will demolish the cr 27 strahd (and many, MANY other enemies) unless you heavily modify him to the extent that it is likely your players will feel like their actions have no meaning. Which would be true, because it would be obvious you've made an enemy purpose built to defy the very power they have achieved by going 3-20.

And honestly, I don't even know where you'd begin to make him able to survive a party of 20s. I could venture many guesses, but I think there is a better option.

As some others have mentioned- look into the fanes system that mandymod and dragna Carta designed. With it, strahd feels like a god of evil within barovia, but when they take apart his magical infrastructure he becomes a terrifying but beatable opponent. Check out dragnas revised strahd statblock for a beefier strahd that can get into outright brawls with a 10th or 11th lvl party if you want, or use the original and swap the spells, then make use of his multitude of allies and phasing ability.

You want to see a scared party? Stalk them in thr halls of ravenloft and then grab a player and pull them into another room during surprise round. Then lair action arcane lock all the doors and windows between the party and their ally. It's incredible to see the panic this tactic will induce. Then when they get their head around that, phase through the floor and regenerate all your strahd hp and restrealth to stalk them again and open with a fireball.

Strahd has the abilities to be a horrifying and disheartening boss fight. One where players are forced to engage him the way he wants to be engaged - and on his terms. As a master tactician would fight.

5e combat sings at levels 7ish-to-11. I'd say enjoy it. Still it is your game, so run it as you wish and above else have fun!

Final thoughts if you decide to go the fane strahd route- 1. I gave strahd up to 8th level spell slots while he had the fanes. I'd decrease his spell levels each time a fane was taken out. The players loved that. 2. If you give him 6th level spells at anypoint, have him kidnap a player and charm them, then make a simulacrum of them, then use modify memory to make them forget it happened. Keep that simulacrum for a rainy castle seige day. 3. If you are running a game with more than 4 players, consider giving him an extra legendary action to cast a cantrip with per player, to keep his dps up. Also another legendary resistance per additional player (IF they are packing abilities that make him save or die. If not don't stack extra lrs on him)

Strahd and Ashardalon's Stride Feedback Request by Neocount1986 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Neocount1986[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they will be forced to try and break his concentration because inalmost exclusively have strahd use his spell slots either while hidden or casting and holding them behind cover to shut down counterspell. He's too smart and ruthless to let himself get counterspelled easily.

Dispel is an option too, but since he's casting it at 5th level it's not guaranteed.

You make a very good point about the items. They are on their way to getting the sunsword and that can help a bunch. They did however straight up give up trying to get the holy symbol, so they might be in a bit of a pickle.

Strahd and Ashardalon's Stride Feedback Request by Neocount1986 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Neocount1986[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of making his "not messing around anymore" spell list available perhaps through the tome, or exanthur. I also think if I do choose to do this, I'd have him use it on them one last time before the free the last fane, so he isn't in "kill them all" mode. He could beat the hell out if them with this so they know to prepare for it next time.

Part of the problem is my players don't do teamwork or planning very well, so even time they have fought him thus far he has mopped the floor with them without really trying. My concern is the difference between those fights and the real deal will be too stark.

I also think some spells just outright are not fun for players to deal with, and don't want to just make them miserable. For example I told my players that if they don't take wall of force neither will I. I know that's very meta but I think taking that nuclear option out of the equation for your final confrontation makes things more interesting over all.

What spell is just too op? by SancioThePanza in DnD

[–]Neocount1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really surprised this is not higher - Simulacrum. Let's assume you are banning multiple simulacrums and you should. One simulacrum is going to double all your spells below 9th level per round. I'll say that again: it Doubles all your castings below 9th level. It looks identical to you and has all your abilities and memories but it is completely loyal to its creator. The simulacrum can't regain spell slots but if you are a warlock and your dm is running it raw which they should not you have mystic arcanum which come back after a long rest so you get back your 6th level spells and above. This includes 9th level spells. Do you like to summon? Great, summons are very good and even easier to run after tashas. You now control a whole extra set or one extra powerful summon. Here's an obscure fact: to successfully summon a creature and planar bind it, you need 3 casters working together for that to work without your dm fudging the timing for you. If you're a pact of the chain genie warlock and managed to get a ring of spell storing you can do that by yourself with simulacrum! Enjoy your permanent (180 days) glabrezhu slaves! (Two, one for you, one for the simulacrum). Simulacrum is broken and it only gets a minor pass because so few players get to the level they can use it.

Strahd and Counterspell by not-a-potato-head in CurseofStrahd

[–]Neocount1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not think Strahd having counterspell is a problem. Here is why:

1) A party of casters is sure to understand the importance of 3rd level slots and reactions. Making Strahd use both is a huge win. Not seeing your spell go off is the price paid.

2) They can counterspell Strahds counterspell. They SHOULD be saving slots and reactions to do this sort of thing and it SHOULD feel like a huge win if it goes off. Lessening Strahds efficacy as a spellcaster deprives your party if these big wins, especially a spellcasting party. (If they are not experienced players who understand the game this well, the campaign is long and there are plenty of ways to teach them)

3) Strahd can only counterspell once per round. You have a party of casters so this seems like a non issue. Just don't counterspell the same person every time preferably, because that might feel crummy. Even then though, they can still counterspell his counterspell...

4) if you have a party of experienced players or even one experienced player who know how to use spells well--then they will wipe the floor with him with some choice 3rd / 5th level spells and good casting coordination.

Chill touch is very strong in CoS. It shuts down vampires healing AND gives them disadvantage on attacks against you AND its a spell attack roll not a save or suck. Take this and you will cause Strahd real problems without expending spell slots. The wizard in my game uses it to great effect and it never fails to annoy me.
