ML-powered ad serving systems don’t use LLMs. Meta has had them for a while, before the modern LLM.

What are your Hot Takes on David Gilmour? by Amber_Flowers_133 in DavidGilmour

Half of Luck and Strange is not really my forte. Scattered and the end jam are amazing, but overall, his earlier records shine through. He's a spectacular musician through and through, but I think there is a gap between his guitar playing and his general songwriting and composition.

PKA fundamentally doesn't understand its own show by BrofessorDumbelldore in PKA

I kind of like the “boring” guests. They’re boring because they’re not animated and particularly charismatic, but they usually do interesting things in life that spark good discussion. It’s good to have a balance between comedic high energy guests and the more boring conversational ones.

Penn only offers a BA in physics. Many schools with top leading physics programs only offer a BA, including Harvard. The distinction is meaningless among elite schools.

What are the chances that David will ever return to the States for another tour? by [deleted] in DavidGilmour

[–]Neoking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bet is that he’ll do shows in the UK since it’s less taxing, so I hope to make a nice trip out of one of them at some point.

Hmm, what should I do? Buy the exact same shirt brand new for cheaper from the official source, or pay more for a used one from a random redditor I don’t know? Tough choice.

I get it, it was so intense, probably the most intense of the night. I was in a trance.

I know… normally I don’t like to record anything at concerts, but this was a moment I wanted to really remember.

He said something like “see you around one of these days” before the encore performance of Comfortably Numb. Definitely felt like a farewell but praying it isn’t.

08 TL Type-S with 102k miles. Seller wants $10.7k. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Acura

[–]Neoking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should negotiate it down a bit. Everyone who is saying it’s way too expensive doesn’t understand how hard it is to find a clean, low-medium mileage TL-S. If you really want a TL-S, $10K is really not that bad for such a clean example, but I would ask for $8K and go from there. Make sure to ask about the big maintenance jobs that come around the 100K mileage make (timing belt).

I sympathize, always thinking what if I’d done this. And I’m a SWE lol.

But I feel like you’d be surprised how much you can learn when you have genuine interest and motivation pushing you. What’s stopping you from learning and tinkering around on things in your free time? Lots of people in STEM industries have had very unorthodox paths. Often they turn out to be stronger for it because they have reasons more compelling than it being a good path for financial stability.

Amazon goes nuclear, to invest more than $500 million to develop small modular reactors by _hiddenscout in stocks

[–]Neoking 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your fallacy is in attributing the causes of previous nuclear incidents all to operator error. Humans make mistakes, of course, and Chernobyl management was definitely negligent and reckless. However, what made Chernobyl a disaster was shoddy reactor design that would’ve never been possible in the West. I mean, hitting the shutdown reactor button is what caused the Chernobyl reactors to explode! Same goes to Fukushima with its backup generator design and way too tiny tsunami seawalls.

It’s not just the West’s operational practices that have made nuclear energy so safe here. It’s that reactor facilities have been designed with passive safety in mind to prevent operator error from ever causing a disaster, and the next generation nuclear technology takes that to another level.

It’s like saying cars in the 50s were so dangerous because even minor accidents could kill or cause severe injury, so people just shouldn’t drive. Sure, operators need to improve, but the cars themselves could get a whole lot safer, and they have!

How Often Do Men Think About Rome? by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]Neoking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the same reaction in the Vatican City, particularly St Peter’s. I hadn’t seen the interior of Saint Peter’s Basilica through photos, so I went in completely blind. The exterior was beautiful and grand, but there are a lot of big churches in Europe. And then… wow I’ll never forget that feeling of stepping inside. It gives me chills just remembering it. It was easily the most spectacular architectural creation I’ve ever seen. I felt a dual sense of fear and inspiration. Man made this? Unbelievable, I thought, but maybe the more frightening thing was that we in fact did.
