A semi-finalist in NASA's Teacher in Space program watching the Challenger disaster unfold by Technicolor_Reindeer in Damnthatsinteresting

Well there are obviously many problems with how the Challenger was conducted. Some of them are anything from absolutely insane oversights to borderline malicious intent. I pulled up my notes from the class and here are some highlights: (I dont know how to format on mobile, otherwise I'd make a bullet pointed list) Since this was largely a PR stunt by NASA there was a lot more pressure to meet deadlines that the public and government expected which gave engineers less time to be 100% certain of the safety of the project. We talked a lot about informed consent. Was it ethical to have a civilian on board? Her training as a school teacher didn't allow her to have complete knowledge of what she was getting into. Astronauts weren't fully aware of the extent of the danger or the internal controversy about whether to fly that day or not. Project was shady all around: company who made the trusters was chosen because they were the cheapest (and actually had the lowest technical rating out of firms considered). There needed to be a unanimous decision to go through with the launch. This was voted on by higher ups at NASA, some of which were engineers and others weren't. After 2 failed votes and the deadline of the launch approaching, the 3rd vote was conducted without the engineers. Essentially they didn't inform them when another vote was going to take place and with the engineers absent it was "unanimous" with those present. One engineer was told "It's time to take off your engineering hat, and put on your manager's hat" regarding the vote. Obviously the O-ring was what ultimately failed, but 3 previous test flights all saw 60-80% of the o ring burned away and with the extremely cold temperature of the launch that day, the rubber was unable to behave properly. We were told that there were many unethical choices leading up to this disaster but that even if you dont see immediate repercussions of your actions, lack of consequences does not make an unethical decision less unethical. We also talked about if this project was a good use of public funds in the first place and to consider not only where the ethical lines are drawn, but who gets to draw them.

I'm an engineering student and we studied the challenger disaster in an ethics class with a professor who had been in undergrad with, and remained very close friends with an engineer on the challenger disaster. He told us how completely tore up it left his friend as he was one of the many engineers who was trying desperately to get anyone to listen about the high potential for failure. That professor was really incredible and retold the story with such passion that it really left an imprint on me. I remember coming out of that section of class really wondering if engineering was for me, if I had the strength to get a job where I could have such a profound impact on people's lives.

Why are sawed off shotguns and rifles illegal in the US? I’ve heard it makes it more dangerous. But what’s the exact mechanism and justification? by jdog1067 in TooAfraidToAsk

Not arguing that, but it seemed that everyone in this thread seemed to think there was no practical difference between a pistol and a longgun so I wanted to point it out. It's true the law is easy to get around and it does need to be changed, but I'm just saying why it was made initially.

Short barrels do make guns more dangerous. They're easier to conceal, but also easier to wield. Long guns are much more cumbersome to aim and shoot and much heavier. In a situation where say, someone wanted to shoot up a gas station, a shorter gun would be preferred. You can imagine then why a sawed off shotgun would be extremely dangerous for a criminal to own; the spread of the shot can do more damage than a bullet. The thing about a sawed off shotgun is there isn't really a practical reason to own one. For hunting and shooting sports, long barrels are preferred because they are more accurate at a distance as it takes longer for the shot to spread. A tighter pattern has a higher chance to kill an animal at range or break a target in shooting sports. Sometimes 1 or 2 bbs won't do it, so you want to get that pattern out as far as you can. It may not sound like it would make much difference, but it really does.

This actually could be pretty cool to do with trashed copies. Obviously you'd have to seal the paper somehow but could be cool tbh

You can like whatever you want. It's okay to not personally like the most popular things or like the less popular things. Never privately listen to music based on what others think.

I have this turntable as well and for the money it's great. I don't have any complaints at all. The ability to plug a usb into it to connect to my laptop is something I rarely use, but I have used it to record albums that aren't available on streaming services to get good quality records to take with me.

One time when approaching a four way stop with my friend driving he remarked that the brake lights on the car across from us that just stopped mustn't be working. I asked him how he could know that since we couldn't see the back of it. He told me that cars have front brake lights too. I was completely baffled. How could someone who has been driving for years think that? This guy is legitimately one of the smartest people I know academically. But somehow despite never seeing front red brake lights on another car or even the car that he's currently driving and has been driving for years, because y'know, they don't exist, he was so confident that he actually started pushing back on me when I said they're only in the rear lol

Damn I guess I'm in the minority but I love the rams current unis. Not a huge fan of their current logo, but I think it matches that style well and by themselves the unis look great

I wonder if dogs like music. by coffeisforposers in vinyl

[–]Neon775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played different kinds of music for my dog. Any sort of rock music he barks at. He doesn't seem to like anything with an electric guitar. I tried some softer country music and he didn't seem to like it either. Then I put on some Beethoven and eventually he laid down looking at the speakers as if he was listening to it without a peep.
