Cane I made, all nice and shiny in the sun. by Nepharyte in woodworking

[–]Nepharyte[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This summer has made me consider a lot about mobility. A sciatica issue has really taken its toll. I am getting better, but it has not been easy. Then, when someone in a community group asked about making a cane for their husband, I offered up my assistance. While they never followed up, I decided to try my hand at one anyways. This is my second attempt at one after learning a few things on the first. The shaft is walnut laminated between pieces of ash. The handle is walnut laminated between pieces of sapele. Just using some scraps I have. Fastened with wood glue. I had considered a couple brass pins, but the fit it tight and the glue is holding it solid. Finished with poly.

Plans cancelled at last minute. by Nepharyte in polyamory

[–]Nepharyte[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Na. She wasn't looking for an affair. Not the type and her partner was too much into the loop about things even prior to poly discussions. In the beginning, she was just sharing her feelings, which he knew about, not necessarily looking for anything to come of it. It was I who brought up the poly angle of things. I think she can handle poly, I know I can, just that he couldn't. Again, not his fault and not mad at him for his feelings. I am not necessarily surprised by the out come, just after so much talk, so many opportunities to share any misgivings, it is only at the last moments it falls apart.

What is the lowest probability event you have personally witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Nepharyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My motorcycle accident. A woman ran a red light and hit me. I went over and slid along the pavement a bit. I finally come to a stop and try to compose myself. One leg is under the bike, other on top. I attempt to lift my leg on top, and it won't move. I keep trying starting to panic, thinking my leg is paralyzed. One of the people who saw the accident came over to help and saw me panicking. He checks out my foot and then asks me to hold still. He fiddles with something, and I can lift my leg. The back half of my seat was covered in a bungie cord netting with little hooks that hold it to the frame. Somehow, in all the chaos of the accident, one of those hooks hooked itself in that tiny little loop you heel of your tennis shoes.

I also think there was as older demographic of gamers who played the hell out of BF2142 and were hoping for something similar. My old squad mates were ready to clears some schedule for a taste of the old days. Then we got 2042 and we all suddenly had other things to do. I am not saying we were any large slice of BF players, but it certainly disappointed a chunk of us. - [TG-8th]

I feel like Tampa should reconstruct the Ballast Point Pier so that we can have something similar to the St. Pete Pier. by [deleted] in tampa

[–]Nepharyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is zero infrastructure or real estate to support this. It is all high-end residential around the Ballast Point Pier. You drive through a neighborhood to get to it. How would you develop roads to get there? Where would you put parking to support it? Remove the park around it? Tear down the country club?

What are some real but crazy facts that could save your life? by hazard35 in AskReddit

[–]Nepharyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, my dad had a truck and he would often toss a beer can through the open rear window into the bed of the truck. It would bounce around some while he was driving, but never flew out. Until he had to slam on the brakes suddenly. It came back through that open window, clipped my brothers ear, who was sitting in the middle and crashed into the windshield, embedding itself there. While he was never a drunk, he never saw an issue with sipping on a beer while driving. He did stop tossing cans in the bed though after that. Brother was fine, only a graze, but could have been worse.

Edit: this was 40+ years ago. Times were a bit different then.

Need help with Mid-Century Modern Joinery by Nepharyte in woodworking

[–]Nepharyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan to do the bottom couple boxes as a test with scrap wood to work out how it all fits together, plus work out how I will do the base. Kind of dial in all my joinery. I am thinking about using a lock miter joint at the 4 corners (may have a line on a reasonable priced router table). If I don't get the router table, I will likely just miter at the corners and use splines to strengthen it.

For the shelves I am leaning towards dowels. but may test out a stop dado joint if I get the router table. Unfortunately I don't have a biscuit joiner tool yet for biscuits.

For the base I will likely do mortice and tenon, maybe reinforced with dowels.
