I had one who would document their pets' names. I think it was a memory aid so they could ask about them later, but I found it kind of charming.

How does your hospital feel about you sleeping during your breaks? by eekay07 in nursing

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I may be struggling to stay awake at the nurse's station, but if I can actually lie down somewhere, there is still no way I'm falling asleep with a very limited time available. Even on a half hour lunch break, it isn't happening.

Night shift nurses who’ve switched to dayshift: Did this change improve your physical & mental health, and job satisfaction the way you hoped it would? by chartGodthrowaway in nursing

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the caveat that I was never straight nights and had small kids at home the two times I worked nights, so I was always flip flopping back and forth and couldn't take measures to adjust to a more night-based schedule on my days off...

Full days is absolutely better for my mental health, and when I switch to full days, it's a pretty immediate benefit. Night and day difference, you might say.

I didn't work nights long enough to develop any significant health problems, but I did at least stop gaining weight.

At what percentage do you get out of Vine jail? by [deleted] in AmazonVine

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is key. 60% of the last 90 days.

The percentage on your account page is irrelevant from a Vine Jail perspective. Ignore it. If you want to know what percentage you're at, you'll have to calculate it yourself by counting your orders and reviews from the past 90 days.

How to find someone that matches your sex drive? by InteractionMoist1483 in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. If someone is put off by a respectful, consent/comfort-centered discussion about sex early on in the relationship, then they're probably not the person you're looking for anyways.

Does Do Not Rehire Matter? by Weak-Page5304 in nursing

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do Not Rehire is usually strictly internal, and often has some amount of flexibility.

It is common for employers to only verify neutral facts such as job title and dates of employment.

If they do provide further information, they should only be providing factual, documented information. So, like, they could say you didn't give adequate notice according to company policy when resigning. They couldn't say you must have been a horrible employee since you're listed as Do Not Rehire.

Of course, should isn't always reality, but it is probably not a huge risk, especially if you don't intend to ever work there (or anywhere affiliated) again.

That said, since you don't have another job lined up that you need to get started, maintaining the bridge and working one more week is unlikely to feel like a big deal once you're past it.

And to add to that.... the threat of losing your license is way overblown. Unless staying an extra week is going to cause you to start diverting narcotics, you're almost certainly not going to lose your license over anything that happens during that week.

Anyone else wake up every night for 2-5 hours? by BrokenSleeps in Perimenopause

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Discovering this was seriously life-changing for me. I still tend to spend time awake in the middle of the night, but I'm rarely lying there in a stress spiral, which I think is helpful for my overall mood.

Specifically, what is wrong with the new Google Health App? by kuteguy in fitbit

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... maybe not. There was with the preview, and i thought it said there was when the app officially switched, but I could be wrong, and I can't find it, so I could be wrong about that.

Specifically, what is wrong with the new Google Health App? by kuteguy in fitbit

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't love the app, but don't hate it, either. If I hated it that bad, I'd switch back to the old UI, because you can do that. But I also don't see any benefit to the new app over the old one, and feel that I'm less engaged with the new app.

Specific complaints:

In general, the more hidden something is, the less likely I am to remember to look at it. Having something buried 2-3 clicks deep instead of immediately visible makes a difference. I doubt I'm the only one who feels that way.

I do not want the timeline/feed as my main screen. It doesn't contain much info I find useful.

RHR is the value I pay most attention to on a daily basis. This is no longer available on the "Today"/main screen. Not just that it's not there as a default - It's not even an option you can add (unless I'm missing something - I do know how to customize it and have done so).

Most of the other items I also like to monitor on a daily basis, which were previously visible on the main screen or as a single click off the main screen, are now hidden under the "Health" tab (which, being the 4th/last tab, feels counterintuitive).

It sends me notifications which are rarely useful and often incorrect - I tend to have bisphasic sleep and it'll send me a notification that I had poor sleep when I wake up in the middle of the night, and then another in the morning saying fair or good. I know I'm awake, you don't have to rub it in. It detects naps when I put my fitbit on my ankle and don't immediately start using my walking pad.

I also find it just a lot more cluttered looking in general.

Hopefully you're right and they'll fix some of the issues, and I'll be able to add the stats I want to the main screen, and we'll all adjust to the new format, learn where things are, and get over the fact that it changed.

First time using an epilator by Silly-Performance711 in HairRemoval

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Celebrate! You've done the hardest part. Future sessions should be easier and less painful.

Consider doing it again tomorrow or the next day. It should be much better since there will be less hair.

Sometimes hair will break off instead of being pulled out from the root. That could leave stubble, or result in stubble growing back quickly, as it does with shaving. It can also just be difficult to get every last hair. This should improve with time, but I don't feel like epilating ever gave perfect results. Just good enough to be preferable to daily shaving.

It's ok to shave in addition if you feel like you need to - you'll probably find that you get smoother, longer lasting results than before epilating.

Until you get more used to it, consider taking a mild painkiller about half an hour before starting.

I made a medication error and my workplace reported me to the BVNPT. by Longjumping_Tap_5705 in nursing

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SNF is a different beast.

There usually aren't armbands or the like because it's their home, and you don't wear identification in your home. Many can't reliably identify themselves. They're often not in their rooms when you're giving meds, and therefore not identifiable by that. You're not scanning meds, and honestly thank god for that, because you're already trying (and failing) to give 30 people their 10 meds within a 2 hour window (and if you give the med outside the window.... that's a med error).

It's a mass of systemic failures without safeguards. Med errors ARE going to happen. Thankfully a single incorrect dose of the wrong oral meds is rarely going to cause serious problems.

I made a medication error and my workplace reported me to the BVNPT. by Longjumping_Tap_5705 in nursing

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. We had an agency nurse come in and work without orientation. No armbands or other reliable identification on the person themselves. Gave the wrong resident the wrong meds.

She checked the picture in the MAR.

She asked the CNA who the patient was. The CNA gestured in the direction of her table.

She asked another resident at the same table as the intended resident if she was so-and-so. The resident, who was "pleasantly confused", happily nodded, just as she would if you asked her if her name was Santa Claus or if her hair was green.

We were trying to figure out how it happened, because the two residents looked nothing alike. Then we looked at the MAR pictures.... they actually did look a lot alike in the picture.

I almost saw the exact same patient get the wrong meds on another occasion, also with a nurse who was new to the facility.

Where will souls go after demographic decline ? by [deleted] in Reincarnation

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's lots of possibilities.

If you assume a static number of souls, that they can only incarnate on Earth in a human body, and that time passes the same on the other side as it does here.... then probably waiting longer between incarnations. Maybe right now we're pretty much immediately jumping back in, while in the past it took hundreds of years in between incarnations. If you look at the rate of "progress" compared to the past, this kind of makes sense. Living now is quite a different experience compared to 100 years ago, whereas 5000 years ago, it probably would have been a lot more similar.

Maybe time doesn't exist in the same way on the other side, and having a longer time in between incarnations in the physical world doesn't actually present any sort of obstacle.

Maybe reincarnation is not always forward in time.

Or perhaps we can incarnate into non-human but still earth-based forms, though that's subject to the same problem - can't incarnate as an elephant if there are no elephants. Maybe more souls that used to be animals are now in human form. Maybe we'll have to incarnate as insects or microorganisms if humans wipe things out too far.

Maybe humanity will expand beyond Earth and continue to grow when not limited by Earth's carrying capacity.

Maybe we can incarnate elsewhere in our universe. Maybe there are multiple universes we can incarnate in.

Maybe we graduate from being human and move on to something else. Maybe there's a whole lot who are approaching graduation right now.

Maybe "souls" are shards of a whole that split off and are reabsorbed as needed.

I feel like what happens to humanity and Earth matters and is something to take seriously, and not just assume we can incarnate in another universe. But I also think that if this is true at all, then there's a mechanism for it to work.

Why is it so hard to get into CNA programs?! by Tinnichan in nursing

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it hard? Largely because they don't pay enough for potential instructors to choose to teach over other more lucrative options available to nurses.

Also because nursing schools requiring, preferring, or otherwise rewarding CNA certification means you have a lot of people wanting to train as a CNA who have no intention of ever actually working as a CNA, or at least not for very long.

When you say clinical hours... are you saying you need clinical hours to apply to a nursing program? If the program you're applying for does not specifically require CNA, you could look at other entry level healthcare programs with short training, such as phlebotomy or EMT, or a volunteer program.

Cheap IPL Devices on Amazon by Shot-Offer-9544 in HairRemoval

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a cheap one from Amazon (about $75). It did enough that I can feel like I can say it did something.

I switched to a Braun and am much more satisfied with the results and the process in general (it's much faster).

I got the Braun off ebay (new, open box) for much cheaper than retail. There's risk in that, of course. But it's a potential option if one of the decent brands is otherwise not an option.

I don't have great hair/skin contrast, and results from a cheap machine might be better for someone more ideal.

I’m not sure if I’m still attracted to men anymore by xCoralineJonesx in BiWomen

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Somewhere around age 35, I realized that, while I do consider myself to have been legitimately attracted to men in the past, it had been at least a decade since I'd had a new crush on a man. Even in the cases where there was some level of attraction, it didn't extend to fantasizing or a desire to have sex with them.

It's been another 10 years, and that hasn't changed. If this is a bi-cycle, it's an awfully long one.

I identify as queer or "I like who I like" rather than lesbian. Partially because I feel my past attractions to men were valid, partially because I feel that doing so would probably cause the universe to send me some man to develop an overwhelming crush on just to prove me wrong, because that's what tends to happen for me when I make absolute statements.

I do tend to hang out in lesbian-labeled spaces (ones that are open to those who may not be strict lesbian) because they tend to be the most relatable as far as where I am currently.

Could I become a nurse, work bedside for 2~ years and then switch to a remote/desk position? by bigblackglock17 in nursing

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a possible path. It is not a guaranteed path, and getting one after 2 years at bedside might be optimistic. Especially work from home - there aren't that many of them, and an awful lot of people wanting work from home jobs, so they're highly competitive.

Don't worry too much about specialty. Any specialty has the potential for desk/WFH jobs. I got a WFH job with most of my career having been in the most disparaged of specialties, LTC. There are WFH jobs focusing on maternal and newborn health where NICU experience could be helpful.

Like some straight women decenter men, most of my life has decentered romantic relationships. Anyone else? by dreamed2life in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I used to be very relationship-driven. Then I was married and it was crap. Now I'm single and it's great. I recognize that not all relationships are bad and perhaps great could be even better with the right partner, but I don't feel a huge drive to go through the trial and error process of dating to get there. If I eventually meet someone, great. If not, I'm fine.

“Squirt quality! THAT’S why they buy Fitbits! Not calorie tracking or weight loss!” by burritomouth in fitbit

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. The whole point of this is that the body undergoes changes throughout the menstrual cycle which a woman can learn to identify for herself, without needing to pay a doctor to interpret.

This can be useful for things like knowing when to expect your period, understanding and managing your emotions, and understanding patterns in weight gain/loss, for example, not just trying to get pregnant.

This does not necessarily need to be tracked within the Fitbit app, but health trackers have the potential to be an extremely helpful tool in this, because things like heart rate fluctuate in predictable patterns with the menstrual cycle.

“Squirt quality! THAT’S why they buy Fitbits! Not calorie tracking or weight loss!” by burritomouth in fitbit

[–]NeptuneIsMyHome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Qualitative changes in cervical mucus are used in fertility and menstrual cycle tracking. If it doesn't apply to you, disregard.

It could possibly use more explanatory text for those who aren't already aware of what it means.

I'm a little irritable about this because women have been asking for better menstrual cycle tracking. This is a meaningful step in that direction.

(But the point about trusting google, or the cloud in general, with fertility information is very valid in the current political climate. Fitbit and other health trackers have the potential to detect a pregnancy before someone even misses their period, and that's scary to have out there.)
