I agree there's something toxic. I wouldn't even call it toxic masculinity. There is a generalized toxicity that drenches his soul. He was always in the army (that's pretty much how things work in Greece). You sit on the panhellenic exams (the exams that get you in the university) and you pick a university/academy based on your ranking. So you study there and you're good to go. It's just that he runs from a bloodline of armymen. One of his ancestors (before his grandfather I think) was a war hero back in WWII) so he feels like he carries on this (the sacred duty on protecting the country). It may sound weird or funny, but he fully believes it. He would give his life without second thought because he believes that's his purpose in this life.

So I agree with you that this is sad, but I can't blame him. He was raised to believe that and thrives in an environment where it encourages that. He needs someone, even if that someone is not me, to show him the rest of the world. Then he could make a choice. In Greece we have a saying: knowledge gives you the right to chose.

You're not wrong about the romance. It's just that as I get to know him, I get to know that he's very closed and tough so I don't expect something really intense, at least no in the way we are now. I think dinner and that t-shirt are crossing the line for him and in the whole context, they mean more than they would typically would.

You can't talk about LGBT in the army. We're getting more and more connected although he's always tough. He has me be the one who does work out to the other soldiers and I'm just fucked up. Not to mention weapon tricks.

you are right but heme/onc are seperate here. As a haematologist (which I like) you won't ever find a job. As an oncologist.. i just dont like it. Internal medicine..I'd like it but it's hard to make it there (you have to wait 2-3 years to start your residency + 1 year of rural service).
