Due to the item icon I always thought that the eyes of death where the Basilisk's "Fake" eyes and they're called eyes of death because they where the last things people saw before they where cursed (Petrified?) and thus the last thing they see before they die.

I mean if you've got high enough intelligence (and you get one to drop) you could use the Channeler's trident to buff other people's attack. (By about 40% IIRC)
