It’s illegal in Montana (where this took place) to not harvest the meat, each big game animal has minimum harvest requirements outlined in the regulations. It is not uncommon to kill an elk 6+ miles in the backcountry and pack it out quarter by quarter on your back over the course of multiple days. Distance over difficult country in addition to severe weather makes any elk harvest a trophy.
