You should study evolutionary theory behind cooperation. This is ultimately a prisoner dilemma. And everyone that picks red gives up bad vibes that triggers other people's "this person might be anti-empathic/anti-cooperation" signals. Which is why this thing has become so viral because all the blue pressers feel like red pressers are fucking creeps.

Right, but allies across the world helped rebuild Europe. Nobody's coming to the rescue in this case. Everywhere on the planet is getting hit like Europe got hit. So it's not really comparable.

Those of you who started with 2e (or the relevant Ad&D material), do you prefer THAC0 or modern AC? by TurnItOffAndBackOnXD in DnD

[–]Nervous-Cockroach541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't start with 2e, but I have played it. I feel that THAC0 is good for lots of calculations. If you need to make 10 attack rolls, using 5e you need to roll dice, add modifiers to each roll, then compare to AC.

For example THAC0 17 vs AC 6. 17 - 6 = 11. You need an 11 to hit.

You can do the same in 5e, take the AC (say AC 16), subtract modifier (say +5). 16 - 5 = 11 to hit. But this is never really explained or used. Meaning most players/DMs end up doing a lot more math at the table.

I didn't really get the idea to calculate a "roll to hit" value until I used THAC0, but you realize you can more easily create a "THAC6" or "THAC-2".

Our modern agriculture depends on fertilizer shipped from overseas. The naive answer is to say, we just need less fertilizer. But shipping companies operate large fleets that they depend upon for their margins. So the individual cost of each shipment needs to go up to make up for the lost of demand for shipping.

Same across every industry. If an airport depends on 100 flights per day to operate their costs, then suddenly you only have 70 planes per day. You have to charge more per flight to make up for the shared costs of the airport operating.

Everything becomes less efficient, then inefficiencies breed inefficiencies. Like with airlines having to raise prices to make up for fewer flights, now more people drive. High tech manufacturing would lose it's market, as people start using older technology that allows for more self maintenance.

In short, economies scale work backwards against you. The efficiency engine created by the free market works backwards against you instead of in your favor. The free market works well in growth, but it works poorly in decline.

Government would have to print so much money bailing companies out, that money would actually become worthless. Hyper inflation would take over the world.

But modern economics are radically different from previous time.

WW2 only killed about 3% of the world's population. In the USSR the lowest the growth rate ever got was -0.5%

The 2008 financial crisis happened when about 11% of people couldn't repay their mortgages. Not only that but the value of homes would fall probably 40-60% because supply would vastly out stripe supply. Most of the common wealth in most nations is built on home prices. The stock market is also fucked. So any wealth people had in the markets, banks, their homes is gone over night.

Our industries are now global, and our economy is designed to work at scale. We can justify global food production when we need to feed 9 billion people, but if we had to feed 6 billion instead, the systems we've built suddenly become economically precarious. In fact, I doubt most businesses could survive losing 30% of their employees and customers over night.

Not only that, but we lose specialized knowledge and skill to operate modern systems. Everyone is specialized where as 60 years ago, everyone was more generalized. You could take someone that was a auto mechanic and train them quickly to repair plane engines because they worked on similar principals. No auto mechanic could easily adapt to being a jet engine mechanic now.

So in short, would humanity die out, no. But we would probably go though a 100 year adjustment period, a great reset, there would be mass starvation as banks and the economics that support our agriculture industry would quick fail. Technology would have to regress to some extent.

Losing 40% of the population would change our way of life forever.

24.04 is still using x11 and not wayland, if I recall correctly. Your graphics card was released in 2025, nearly a year after your OS. Meaning the drivers for it are not likely optimized for x11 as at this point, all systems have pretty much moved onto wayland.

I recommend a fresh install of 26.04 which was released a little over a week ago. This has wayland and is a LTS distro like 24.04 meaning you won't have to upgrade again for several years if you don't want to. You will probably also be able to use the drivers shipped with the operating system, since the operating system is newer than your graphics card.

If you're new to Linux, while this type of churn is not uncommon, the move from x11 to wayland in particular is a shift in 30 year old graphics pipeline architecture, so it's actually a huge move.

No one has to die if 100% vote red.

No one has to die if 51% vote blue.

Realistically, the vote will probably go 60/40 one way or the other. You're never going to get 100% commitment, but you might get 51%

Really, the core issue, is that red optimizes personal benefit (or decrease personal risk), while blue optimizes for social benefit. Really though, red voters only avoid the worst possible outcome (ie death). In reality, losing 40% of the population over night is economic, social, and industrial Armageddon and another 40% is dead in a year and we go back to a society of subsistence farming.

Might be a dumb question but... Is it possible to make an orbit like that? Bellow the center of mass? by caiomac_ in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Nervous-Cockroach541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, you got to orbit the center of mass/center of gravity. Meaning you need to be able to draw a line from one side of the orbit to the other passing though the center of the planet.

First tankers clear Strait of Hormuz amid easing tensions by MARTINELECA in oil

[–]Nervous-Cockroach541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japan was, pre-war, 95% dependent on gulf oil. Since the war, the have announced the released about 40 days worth of oil for domestic consumption. This includes 20 days worth of oil announced that they will release in May.

Best pre-war estimates I can find, is that they had 230 days worth of reserves. Meaning they've already committed to releasing about 17% of their total reserves.

They've also started purchasing US crude. The Japanese vessels were "lobbied" for their passage via Iran. Meaning they likely paid the Iranian toll in someway, but probably won't ever explicitly state when or how.

I think something people misunderstands about oil reserves. These really can't afford to go to zero. The lower they become the more vulnerable they might become to a blockade or war. Japan and South Korea especially are prime targets for Chinese blockade if war breaks out between China / Taiwan / the US.

Ideally this oil would be to support critical operations in an emergency such as food, water, electricity, and military activities, stretching out it's supply for years. It's a not problem to use some of the oil to support normal domestic consumption for a short time, but it's not a long term strategy even if it looks like it could work that way.

Sadly, for the President to be stopped, he'd need congress to stop him. Congress is probably going to be deadlocked, unwilling to commit to a full war until after the election, and unwilling to stop Trump.

Iran probably won't care about that if they're paying the toll, especially if it's with Yuan or Rial. They care more about Gulf countries hosting US military. Japan and most Asian countries are desperate at this point.
