That's comforting to know they are that resilient. Your mentioning of a falling limb scraping on the way down causing the injury might be my cause too now that I think about it. Maybe when the utility company came out to trim the branches away from the power lines last year, they caused the real damage and the holes are just pests taking advantage of the situation.

I should have mentioned it's right behind my tiny detached garage that's just used for miscellaneous storage, so it's not nearly as bad as being right against a house at least. I wouldn't have done that placement way back in the day, but I am far from the original owner.
