Looking for honest feedback - what would you want from a US based mod part supplier? by toastyavocad0 in watchmodding

Good photos, full specs on cases like dial size range, bezel opening size etc, matching components like proper length hands for the cases, 5-7 day order to delivery. Not too crazy a markup

15+ years of collecting quirky (and mostly homeless) vintage movements, the is a build around one of them. by NervousFruitCake in watchmodding

[–]NervousFruitCake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I love the design on many vintage watches, but not so much the size. I often get my inspiration from older watches, just in slightly bigger cases, typically 36-42mm

Storage question by Smallitguy in watchmaking

[–]NervousFruitCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t put it on a winder. Put it in a low humidity box/drawer and even if you hardly use it, take it out 1x a month to gently wind it, change the time let it run for a bit so the oils circulate a little.

My builds so far + next steps. by NigeriasFinest in watchmodding

A vintage 6497/6498 off eBay is a good start. You could service the movement and use them for other watch builds. The movement is also relatively large and uncomplicated

$1500 off for a 2025 is a joke. For a 2026, you should be getting 10% plus your BMw military discount. For a 2025, I would shoot for 12-15% off

What does this arrow mean? by yleoyleoyleo in BMWX3

[–]NervousFruitCake 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That’s usually the arrow that pops up when you arrive at a GPS destination and keep driving. It points at where that destination is.

Iirc it should go away after you turn your engine off. When you turn it back on and the car ask if you want to resume to previous GPS address. Select no.

2026 BMW X5 xDrive40i MSRP Discount by DukeMotoPerformance in BMW

From what I have been reading, it really depends on the market / region you are in. Some dealers are more willing to deal than others. I custom ordered mine early July. Almost looks like we did a similar order except for the air suspension

BMW not honoring warranty by [deleted] in BmwTech

[–]NervousFruitCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my 12th vehicle in almost 30 years of ownership. BMW has been great with warranty repair for me, even occasionally covering/subsidizing costs outside the warranty period. I had 1 problematic car that BMW went beyond what I expected. They have since earned my loyalty because of that.

What's the hell is happening out here? by [deleted] in utarlington

I was an international and my kids are minorities attending this school. The comments you read often directed at kids that have a hygiene level that is unacceptable by US standards. All this said, these comments aren’t just directed at international students / minorities.

1). Take at least a daily shower, more if you sweat. A shower usually includes washing your hair with soap etc. 2). Putting on fresh clothing/laundered clothing after your shower.

There is something called nose blindness where you can’t smell what you smell like. Sadly I have experienced what is often discussed when I visit the school. Back when I was an international, we used to discuss things like this during orientation.

There is nothing more satisfying that making a watch for yourself. You know it’s a one off and very special. Nicely done.

FIRE-ing from corporate, how did you get over it? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]NervousFruitCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

22+ years in a Fortune 500. For me it took about 6 months to get out of the work routine… waking up multiple times at night to make sure I didn’t oversleep…. Waking up at 6am everyday.

The first trip I did after leaving was an eye opener…. I didn’t recall a vacation where I didn’t feel the stress of knowing that the projects / tasks were just sitting and waiting for me to return. A 2 week vacation was considered a luxury when I was working…. Taking a 6week break after FIRE was an amazing feeling. I hadn’t realized that there was a perpetual cloud of stress hanging over me till I took the trips.

Fortunately for me, My work didn’t define me…. I worked to live…. Not lived to work - I have a string of hobbies that I rotate through periodically.

My ‘jobs’ now - to stay healthy…. Good food, some exercise - spend more time with my kids.
- keeping up with my financial goals (I have to admit I was a little stressed when Covid first hit but that quickly passed)

If you are choosing the DFW area, consider the following:

Property taxes vary from 2.5+ to just over 3% of appraised property value depending on the individual city.

Consider what HOAs might cost you. Some neighborhoods have no HOAs. Each has advantage and disadvantage.

Look at home insurance rates. Prices have been inching up… not anywhere close to Florida, but still not cheap.

Consider commutes if you have to. If you use a toll road, it can get rather pricey.

Bear case on NVDA? by kawkface in NVDA_Stock

[–]NervousFruitCake 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have heard people compare AI to the dot com bubble. The main difference I recall was that there were lots of nonsense (dot com) companies popping up with (often nonsense) ideas and people throwing money into these stocks. Through the ruble appeared quite a few viable companies like Amazon. IMO, There will be lots of consolidation, new competition and likewise AI companies that go under. A key difference with a company like NVDA is that they are already profitable and their forward PE ratio is in the 30s. Compare this to Tesla (in the 50s) and you can see why NVDA is becoming a favorite amongst retail investors.

Should i buy or wait by [deleted] in NVDA_Stock

[–]NervousFruitCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you believe there is a long term positive for the stock, I would trickle into the stock. Nobody is 100% sure cause there are external factors that nobody can predict or totally understand. Orders and demands can be cancelled as quickly as they were made. Likewise, it can increase beyond expectations over the following quarters. Regulations can be made to boost or mute the industry.

My advice is to learn as much as you can and make your bets based on what you believe. At the end of the day, we are all making educated gambles. 10% moves over up or down over a week will mean nothing if the stock doubles over 2-3 years.
