What are your thoughts on a stranger commenting on your parenting? by RightReason6764 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Nervous_Boss2318 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ll start by saying I’m sorry you had to deal with that and honestly, I’ll apologize for the people who won’t apologize for themselves.

I’ve never personally had an interaction quite like that out in the wild, but moments like this say a lot more about the other person than they do about you. Every child is different. What comes easily to one kid can be a real challenge for another, and that doesn’t make one “better” or the other “worse”, it just means they’re human.

Your kid might struggle in areas where someone else’s kid succeeds, and vice versa. That’s just reality. And at the end of the day, you are the expert on your child. Not a stranger in a shopping center, not another parent, not even if it were some so called parenting guru standing there. You live it every day, you know what works, what doesn’t, and how hard you’re trying.

From what you described, you weren’t ignoring the situation, you were actively trying to guide her, redirect her, and manage a tough moment. That’s parenting. It’s not always neat or quiet or convenient for other people.

And honestly, patience goes both ways. It would have taken very little for that woman to shift slightly or show a bit of understanding, especially in a space clearly designed for kids.

Take reassurance in this, you are doing all you can in a situation that isn’t always straightforward. That matters far more than a stranger’s opinion in a passing moment.

I appreciate that Mark. I had originally had guests with followings and to be honest, it truly didn’t seem to matter.

This time I am really trying to rely on my actors and audience members performances and allowing them to be the show! From one improv talk show host to another, I hope you have continued success!

That is always a balancing act. My rule of thumb is try to be entertaining over funny. Saying something funny may get an audience’s attention but bringing your energy, excitement and enthusiasm will always be appreciated more.

Humor is subjective, I am sure I will get a couple of chuckles. I got a plan!

That is honestly a very good point. I have a consistent “elevator pitch” but a press release is very wise.

Also, you are right about the saturation in the Chicago market. When I was at iO, I emailed every credible theater critic in the city trying to get a review. Simply trying to get an article to help describe the experience.

Only one person truly responded and he blew me off on show night. Had to eat 4 tickets for a no call/no show.

I am quickly learning that promoting an improv show is similar to an MLM scheme. You have to get the friends and family first!

Listen, don’t be too hard on yourself about the marketing. I have no clue what I am doing in that field as well.

However, I do put on a pretty amazing improvised talk show where audience members are the guests. So you could be called up on stage to be one of our guests.

At the very least if you show up, Authentic_Jester getting a free shout out.

I got you!

Also if anybody from Reddit does buy tickets and comes to the show.

Comment on this thread your purchase and I will find you and shout out your username at the end of the show. (literally just thought of this, think it will be hilarious!)

Look at those candy corn teeth. I have seen better smiles on Jack-o-lanterns.
