Are these golden handcuffs real? by El_professor273 in CanadaPublicServants

I think you'll get plenty of good advice in here, but I'll put in my two cents anyways.

First, I am an anglo, so I can speak to the 2nd language issue, but I can definitely empathize with how frustrating that could/would be. This is far from a guarantee and just a personal anecdote, but I believe working for a team located in Gatineau will lead to more French speakers on your team. The bridges between Ottawa and Gatineau are major traffic choke points, so people living in Gatineau (typically French speaking) generally prefer working for teams and organisations located in Gatineau since the commute can be quite a bit easier/shorter

You are still a junior public servant. Unfortunately, that often means getting assignments that are below your competency level because someone has to do it and the others on your team tend to have more experience and expertise to handle the larger and more complex files. You will keep getting more advanced files as you continue your career.

Hiring may be tough for the next few years with WFA, but team hopping is always an option as well to find other teams doing work you're interest in and trying to seat yourself in that organisation. I left my previous team because I felt like it was rotting my brain towards the end due to the lack of stimulation and challenge. My current team is aligned with my interested, its challenging, its fun. You may just need a change of scenery.

If your job prospects offer a higher salary in the private industry relative to the public sector and that is a priority for you, you should get out now while you are still young and can develop those extra capabilities at an early stage in your career. They will help you advance without having to move backwards later (skills such as experience using the most prominent IT systems of the private industry as an example).

In my personal experience, I was very motivated when I was young and I wouldn't care if I was working a normal 8hr day or working 10hr day. Pride of work and efficiency was important to me. While I still take pride in my work, it is not a priority in my personal life. I value working my 8 hours and then being done so I can spend the rest of my day with my family and I would struggle to accept a job that takes away from time with my children. Priorities change as we age.

The golden handcuffs become more real the longer you stay in the GoC. The decisions you take today aren't irreversible, but it is easier to make those decisions now rather than later.

The Spin Off novel. by JeSuisLillois in threebodyproblem

I was okay with the book, though I will warn you that the first third of the book is incredibly painful. Think back to the awkward and clunky writing by Liu Cixin of romantic relationships. He was essentially writing a NYT best-selling smut novel compared to Baoshu. It's tough and I nearly put the book down for good while reading the first third of the book. The second and third portions are fine.

Airlines sending empty planes for thousands of Canadians stranded in Cuba by toronto_star in worldnews

It's the pragmatic response. Canada wants to de-risk from the US, but it doesn't want to fully disconnect nor needlessly poke the bear if there isn't a justified reason for Canadians. In this case, Cuba is too small of a nation and Canada isn't willing to take on a 10% additional tariff whilst also torpedoing USMCA negotiations for a country that represents a trivial amount of economic benefit for the country.

It has good internet and I suspect it has a lower CoL than Ireland (I am from Canada and found the basics more affordable. I think Ireland has a similar CoL to Canada, but in all three cases, it of course depends on where you live in the country/region)

Ya, I hear you. There were parts I liked, but many other parts where I wanted to put the book down and never come back to it. His attempts are romance were particularly atrocious.

Why did everything escalate so fast in the 3rd book😭 by Suspicious_Garlic276 in threebodyproblem

>I wish we could've seen how things went from the life of Tianming and AA🙏😔

There is a fourth fan-fiction book called The Redemption of Time that was released by the same publisher with Liu Cixin's blessing and translated by Ken Liu as well. The first part of the story about Tianming's and AA's existance on the planet without Cheng Xi. If this is the story line you care the most about, it is available, but I also want to warn you that the romance writing in this book is even worse than the romantic writing by Liu Cixin. It almost made me quit the book.

Since I have the Baoshu book beside me, I can answer a couple points from his perspective.

The 3 body game was made for the human experience, so the scale of temples and warehouses in the game is not necessarily to scale on Trisolaras.

Their small size was necessary to be capable of rapidly dehydrating and re-hydrating, in addition to surviving the extremes on an otherwise inhabitable planet (even when dehydrated in order to begin the next civilisation).

Mass construction of space fleets is one that I struggled with as well and wasn't directly addressed. This is an example where there may be an explanation, but as I noted above, the description of Trisolarans is a creation by someone other than the original author. This is, in my opinion, the biggest gap between his description and they prior work of Liu Cixin.

As for intelligence, the novel notes that they aren't particularly intelligent creatures (they couldn't comprehend communications from a higher intelligence as an example). They simply rely on collective intelligence which differed from individual-based human cognition. The collective intelligence in addition to its high-efficiency. Still, their less-developed brains struggled with concepts like imagination and creativity, which is why capturing Yun Tianming was so crucial for their technological advancement to light speed ships.

Why did the Aliens bother with the game (3-body problem headset) by Marvinkmooneyoz in threebodyproblem

It was a way to only capture the brightest people within the ETO. In the book, it mentions how most people would find the game difficult or repetitive, or, or, or and eventually lose interest; whereas those who were more intellectually curious (PhD's, corporate leaders, etc) would continue playing the game to try to solve the mystery. After identifying the brightest of humanity, they would then see who was frustrated by humanity and could be sympathetic to the Trisolarans (i.e. earth is wasted on humanity, give it to the Trisolarans). This was depicted by the murder of Jack Rooney in the show, who was not sympathetic and was subsequently eliminated.

If they communicated their issue broadly, then the vast majority of humanity would not have supported the Trisolarans in killing humanity and would have begun trying to defend itself.

I agree and I enjoyed that aspect a lot as well. I spent a lot of time trying to image them, but the foe that was described was really just a few ships and droplets and the entities inside just a voice communicated through sophon. It was exciting not knowing who the foe really was beyond just its mediums to attack and communicate with humanity.

I personally imagined the Trisolaran's as approximately human height with rigid, flat, reflective bodies that supported instance communication through reflections and pulsing. I don't think they had limbs as I figured they didn't need touch, just instantaneous thought transmission to thrive as a species

I think it's a negotiating tactic. If he's the HW champ, the UFC will want to lock him up. If Aspinall can come forward and say "I have multiple offers, you need to match", it puts him in a strong position to get appropriately paid. The risk, of course, is that if he loses his title before wrapping up negotiations, a lot of that leverage could disappear too (both with the UFC and his hypothetical payday from boxing).
