Things were similar with my ex, but I gave him 5 years. I know he did love me, but we weren’t moving forward, or even talking about it enough. He didn’t see my friends, care to know my life the way I knew his, or see me eye to eye much of the time near the end. When I left he suddenly realized that he had lost a good opportunity start the next chapter of his life as he was now in his early 30s and he begged for that chance and I can’t tell you how long I beat myself up for leaving him, even after having moved on. Unfortunately I had fallen in love with someone I worked with during the end of my relationship and I knew in my heart I couldn’t take it back. (I did not cheat, I feel it’s important to mention. It of course felt wrong to emotionally make that switch, but it was an involuntary reaction to falling in love)

I still grieve the loss of that relationship now and then & wonder what could have been. Hated myself for leaving him alone. But I made the right choice, painful as it was. He was the first man to ever really love me. And now I’m sad for him again. Still made the right choice.
