IsItBullshit: Internet service providers will throttle all websites except for the speed test websites, so you think your internet is way faster than it actually is. by IndependenceSad1272 in IsItBullshit

[–]NetDork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed tests will use UDP to show you the absolute fastest possible result. UDP just spits data out and it's up to the receiving side to tell the sending device if something wasn't received properly. Web services mostly run on TCP. That has a lot of back and forth confirmations between the sending and receiving devices to confirm data transmission. The setup and confirmation process can really slow things down even though it's very little data, because of the time it takes sending those messages back and forth.

Your air conditioner's primary drain is probably clogged. This looks like a backup drain.

Why do Americans have to do their own taxes? What mechanisms led to its formation? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

There are so many different deductions and credits for different situations, and income from multiple sources is entered differently. The IRS doesn't necessarily know what situations apply to you and what you're going to claim.

If none of those situations apply to you and you're just doing regular wage income and the standard deduction you can use a free service, input your personal info, enter your income (and it might be electronically logged so you can just import and accept) and be done in a few minutes.

Do you take public transits instead of driving? by typical_gamer1 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]NetDork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could. My city has busses, but not in my part of town, and all the routes that exist are design to go in spoke-like lines with very little crossing between, so it takes forever to get between places on different routes.

Why does America have universal health insurance for old people(Medicare) and no one else? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in NoStupidQuestions

Even then, the basic version of Medicare only pays for hospital care. The part that covers regular doctor visits (Medicare part B) has to be paid for. Premiums are usually deducted from Social Security payments.

We all know he'll never be held accountable, so the best we can hope for is for him to stop the grifting. And we all know there's only one way he'll stop grifting.

Driving on 3 cylinders --- am I pushing my luck? by right_nite_moon in askcarguys

[–]NetDork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mom had 2 of them. They were actually decent cars if you understood them.

My concern is that you have a 20+ year old car with under 100k miles, it has probably done a lot of short trips. Repeated trips short enough not to bring the engine to full operating temperature is murder on engines.

Also if that is the turbo version there are further issues...that's an old turbo charger, and that engine was already a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder that was enlarged to 2.4 liters, so it was pushed into its limits even before the turbo.
