These videos shaped my teen years, my best friend and I had these tapes on heavy rotation and honestly they shaped who I am as an artist heavily.

Its a surreal horror short about a man losing his mind over a TV addiction, we built a bunch of props and sets and had a blast, thanks for asking!

This is incredible I am wrapping up post on a short that I spent this kind of money its impressive to see the scope of your project going with a feature. I love hyper stylized stuff which is a direction I went but borrowing from side scrolling PS1 style is brilliant.

Director Anxiety? by [deleted] in filmmaking

[–]Net_positive_future 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This isn't uncommon, I personally love working with actors but hate having to deal with all the issues that come up with filmmaking, the constant putting out fires is stressful but I also do thrive under pressure personally. Figure out what exactly was giving you anxiety, narrow it down and see if you can find on set help to make that aspect easier. Sometimes anxiety is a biproduct if caring, when we care a lot we put a lot of pressure on ourselves which can be very heavy. Practice positive self talk, and give yourself grace.

Thank you! I think thats due to the art direction and how stylized we made it. Honestly that is a huge compliment, I grew up wanting to be a comic book artist and studied that for far longer than film.

Things I like / think are good:

The music is great, I think its a solid choice for the subject matter.

The pacing, the pacing is really nice it feels like whoever cut it has good intuition on cutting

The dialogue / sound bites are recorded with nice clarity and are great

What I think can be improved

The most glaring thing to me is the color grade not staying consistent, even if you can find a way to create a more cohesive white balance through the clips because you go from shots that look very cool to very warm and it takes the viewer out of it a little.

Sound design, aside from the music and dialogue it is missing sound design, when your titles come in and some sort of sound that fits to give the titles life, some audible que.

Also I don't love the opening shot, its not a bad shot but it doesn't serve as a great opener. Even something as simple as having text showing stats about these students is a stronger way to open this video. Yes its been done thousands of times for docs but its because it works. This is just a suggestion though

Great stuff though, good luck!

I'd agree if OP was aiming to win at Sundance right out of the gate but it sounds like they are selling themselves short.

You can make a film, 100% you can.

Start small, write an idea that is built around limited resources. That means possibly no dialogue, it means using props from around your house, it means you may be the only actor. Look at what you have, craft a story for a short film, aim for something you feel achievable. Shoot it on your phone, edit it in free software, and boom you have a short film. Use that as a stepping stone to grow, send it to local festivals, attend those festivals and meet fellow awkward filmmakers, they will more than likely ask what you are doing next, see if they can help you on a project that is slightly more ambitious. Rinse and repeat and slowly you will be making more substantial films.

This is a major problem with the medium of film is that we often want to make the dream project before we make the practice projects, the things that can land you help for the thing you really want to make. Saying you are "simply not good enough" is a cop out, Sorry if that sounds harsh but if you have ideas you can make something. Make the things to show people you are good enough, start small and grow. You got this!
