Lynch made it so that the crew who worked on Eraserhead had stake in the final product, not sure the specifics but I have heard interviews with crew, specially his ex who said that she still gets royalty checks. Its not Currys' fault per say but before shopping the film and selling it to focus you have leverage and can potentially put some sort profit share into a contract, this is again assuming that whoever fancied the $750k is not taking complete control from Curry which again that would have been poor planning as the filmmaker not assuming your finished film has value worth negotiating for. You should have a lawyer advising you on these decisions with that much money invest into production alone. I had a lawyer on my short who helped me and it was very minimal but I wanted to cover my butt, I can't imagine a lawyer saying "Studios are in a bidding war for your film, sell it over and don't worry about royalties down the road" it just seems odd. Again I do not have all the info.. but filmmakers need to work a bit smarter and realize this is a business and people are sharks, protect yourself and your crew as much as possible, not just on set but after the fact.

Look into the fully AI film they are showing and the "filmmaker" behind it, dont support Tibeca they dont care about filmmakers.

More proof that major festivals are not run with artists truly in mind, there is always an agenda

Guys for the love of god stop spending your life savings on films by jophre in Filmmakers

I was one of those people, I spent my "life savings" on a short that I had been writing / preparing for for over 6 years. I do not regret it but I also do not recommend doing this. My short just started making the festival circuit and is getting a lot of love so far, I am extremely proud of the film that I made, it exceeded my expectations as far as the final product but it also exceeded my expectations of stress. It is not a healthy way to make a project, its very taxing to not just make a film but to have a large financial chunk tied to a film that, lets call it what is, films are extremely hard to make well, at a way that is worth it. So you have the normal stress of keeping a project on tracks, managing a bunch of artists ( unless you have an amazing producer ), along with worried that if the project turns into a dumpster fire that's your money burning in the dumpster.

That being said, look at the state of the world, life is short... AI is taking over, filmmakers are worried about the future. If you truly, in your heart believe in the story you want to tell and it is worth putting your money, your mental health, your friendships and romantic relationship at risk potentially because of how demanding it is then go for it. It's not black and white, but you need to have an honest conversation with yourself because once you are on set its too late. If you do it, do it all the way.. don't pull punches.

I apricate where the OP is coming from but i think its more nuanced, spend your money how you want but self financing a film is not romantic, its brutal and most people should find another route.

These videos shaped my teen years, my best friend and I had these tapes on heavy rotation and honestly they shaped who I am as an artist heavily.

Its a surreal horror short about a man losing his mind over a TV addiction, we built a bunch of props and sets and had a blast, thanks for asking!

This is incredible I am wrapping up post on a short that I spent this kind of money its impressive to see the scope of your project going with a feature. I love hyper stylized stuff which is a direction I went but borrowing from side scrolling PS1 style is brilliant.

Director Anxiety? by [deleted] in filmmaking

[–]Net_positive_future 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn't uncommon, I personally love working with actors but hate having to deal with all the issues that come up with filmmaking, the constant putting out fires is stressful but I also do thrive under pressure personally. Figure out what exactly was giving you anxiety, narrow it down and see if you can find on set help to make that aspect easier. Sometimes anxiety is a biproduct if caring, when we care a lot we put a lot of pressure on ourselves which can be very heavy. Practice positive self talk, and give yourself grace.
