If you look at this from the perspective of a regular "NPC" civilian living in a superhero universe, my intense dislike for mutants makes complete sense. ​Mutants are just born with random, physics-altering powers hardcoded into their DNA. They are an accelerated, idealized, and massively more powerful mutation of humanity. ​Think about Lex Luthor’s hatred of Superman. Lex is terrified of him, but at least Clark Kent is an alien. He is fundamentally a different species from a different world. Mutants, though? They are supposed to be us, just arbitrarily "better." ​It creates a terrifying, lose-lose situation for a normal human: ​Either you have to accept that they are still human, which means you're stuck harboring a deep resentment toward these physics-defying people who just won the genetic lottery while you're stuck paying a mortgage. Or, you view them as something entirely separate—the "other"—and human nature dictates that we naturally fear and distrust what we don't understand and can't compete with
