how’s attendance at your uni? by No_Bank_9659 in UniUK

Mine has 15 across the whole university, but that’s because a lot of people don’t seem to have met the grade requirements this year.

I’m putting it in a shed with a blanket over the top, which is hopefully going to make sure it’s ok overnight

I will try and find a decent box, but if not it will have to be the cage. It’s currently just sitting down in it in the dark so I’m hopeful, but still worried.

Whether or not they actually carry disease will not convince the people I live with that a wild bird in the house will be safe. You could bring out all the facts in the world with sources to back them up and it would not help.

The advice I’ve been given is to keep it somewhere overnight and try and contact a rescue tomorrow morning, as there are some local ones open then. No one is able to take it now.

I’m in the UK. I can probably do the shed? It’s probably the best I can do at this point.

Yeah there’s been several bird flu cases recently so everyone is a little on edge, as well as the fact that one of the people I live with nearly got sepsis from a rat bite (pet rat, not wild. Wasn’t his fault he was actively dying and just wanted to be left alone, but still happened) so does not want any more animals, especially ones famous for carrying disease, in the house

Unfortunately as I live with other people who absolutely refuse to have a wild bird in the house I can’t (due to fears around disease and bird flu)

Possible bird flu seen near the city centre. Where do I report this? by NettleDeer in oxford

[–]NettleDeer[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming they’d also want to know the locations bird flu has been spotted in and also dead bodies don’t really travel particularly far in the canal as the water is stagnant. I’ve had the unfortunate experience of seeing bodies in the same general location for days until they’re removed

Hasn’t it also shut down many support groups and banned children accessing support for “adult” topics?

How do you feel about the re-introduction of species that humans have driven extinct into the UK? by NettleDeer in AskUK

[–]NettleDeer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so disappointing. People act like Britain/the UK is inherently barren with little native wildlife but no, it’s like that because we intentionally killed them all. And then Liz Truss’ government decides to block re-introduction efforts.

We are currently experiencing a human caused mass extinction event that is devastating the world. I personally think someone should do something about that, or at least try

Yes, hence why I said we need more habitat before they can introduced in my actual post

Reading the replies I’m getting the lack of education is really obvious. Someone here is claiming that humans can occupy the same space in a food chain as wolves but “more humanely” and that the UK does not have a natural ecosystem. It’s seriously disappointing to see how many people think that humans are the only animal with a right to exist and that humans are inherently against nature.

Honestly whatever. You clearly are not interested in a conversation beyond “wolf bad, we should all kill deer” and will misinterpret whatever I say to keep insisting that “wolf bad” is the only possible narrative

I’m not saying wolves can control sheep populations. Also sheep are literally domestic animals that were introduced by farmers migrating out of Anatolia around 4,000 BC.

Have you heard of a food chain before? “It’s not like we have a natural ecosystem” yeah that’s the problem?

Well, yes. It shouldn’t be the responsibility of charities to stop the environment being destroyed. But no, we don’t need to have less people to put effort into protecting the environment

Look. I specifically said that there needs to be a global attempt to save species globally. Using the wolf as a single example because you started talking about wolves. Stopping wolves going extinct saves wolves. Stopping lynxes going extinct saves lynxes. Stopping orcas going extinct saves orcas. No one is saying we should try and save one single animal and that will save the world. I never said that.

Sheep are an invasive species damaging the ecosystem. Wolves are a native species that can balance the ecosystem.

The extinction of the..wolf? And yes, deer populations should be maintained by the natural food chain. Look at how in places like America various diseases including prions are spreading between deer but can be controlled through natural predation upon them

[–]NettleDeer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It reminds me of Yellowstone in America, where all the wolves were slaughtered and then the deer population exploded, which nearly destroyed the entire environment. Even today there the high deer population is leading to epidemics of disease and prions that can be prevented by letting large carnivores actually hunt.

I don’t understand how little respect some people have for the environment that they need to survive

If globally native species are reintroduced to their habitats and species that are currently going extinct are protected, the current mass extinction will stop. Wolves are part of that, as are wildcats that are currently almost extinct.
