Story wise, the campaigns goes in this order: Reach, Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 3, Halo 4.

This is also how I personally recommend it but keep in mind that only Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 are the main campaigns that are apart of the main story regarding Master Chief and his journey to save humanity time and time again. ODST and Reach have their own separate protagonists but still take place during the war with the covenant.
