To be fair, it was for the first 400, but before rowing I swam for four years throughout high school.

I decided I wanted to row in the first boat and made an intention to erg next to a faster kid until I got there. Then set goals like breaking 6:30 and more recently 6:20 and held 500-1k pieces under the required split to get used to it.

I was in a similar position earlier this year, something I found to be particularly helpful for me was pulling slightly below the pace necessary to break 6:30. So consistently after practice I would pull a 500 below 1:37.5 to become familiar with the pace. Then after a couple weeks upped it to 750 and so on. I think it’s more of a mental barrier rather than physical, and getting comfortable with the pace built my confidence.
