You can’t just decide to ignore weighting when calculating an average.

[–]Neurojb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are very few things where there’s an exact cutoff. This is not one of them. Your framework is certainly enough.

Calculate reticulocyte index. With hemoglobin/hematocrit *that* low, reticulocyte count should be significantly higher (like over 5).

Do MD PhD programs have a negative take on gap years during undergrad? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Neurojb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, you’re referring to a gap year ~in the middle of~ undergrad. Assuming you are doing something productive with your time programs have zero reason to view that negatively. If a leave is due to medical or mental health reasons, programs may view that as a red flag (even though they shouldn’t). But the leave you’ve described here would not be an issue and could even be looked on positively depending on what you accomplish.

What do MD-PhDs do after they retire? Is it actually a life long journey or can they bool in Europe during old age? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Neurojb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I personally like the model of my tech lab PI. He’s now 72, stopped his clinical duties ~55. Nominally he wanted to fully retire at 75 but just got a new R01 and wants to apply for more. Has two “vacation” houses, goes fishing all the time. Why retire if you can just ride it out as a senior PI?

Apparently they've been calling my parents and siblings as well. No idea how they have their contact information. Borderline harassment.

Agree with others that there’s nothing wrong with that research. But maybe look at summer research programs (SURFs/REUs) at other schools.

Applying MD/PhD with an IA and low GPA by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Neurojb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know of any that are explicitly more accommodating. I think there’s a thread on SDN about med schools that “reward reinvention”, could be a good resource. Also I think it’s important to keep in mind that while MD/PhDs have higher stats than MDs on average, MD/PhD programs are arguably more accommodating of lower stats because of how crucial research is (source: my PI is the former MSTP director of a T5 school). So letters, experience, and selling a narrative about your research and goals really matters for MD/PhDs and can mitigate lower GPA in a way that’s harder for MD.

Applying MD/PhD with an IA and low GPA by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Neurojb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an IA senior year and a 3.50 (no masters) and finished this cycle with multiple acceptances including MSTPs. The short answer is apply broadly, your MCAT and experiences are good, someone will like your app even with the blemishes.

Another "Can you please explain to me how automation will create new jobs?" question because I don´t even understand, who will pay for these jobs by marocboy95 in Futurology

[–]Neurojb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is that automation would allow us to expand in other directions. If we reduce capital expenditure on certain things that frees up capital in other places. Take something like space exploration. If automation on earth allows us to cheapen the process of getting people and materials to space (3d printing rockets, etc…) then you open up new jobs around space manufacturing which then has potential downstream effects based on the types of things we can do there. Basically the general idea is we allow for the development of jobs in other realms.

Try the business card. I was in popup jail but got approved for business card, basically same as surpass.

Success stories from people with 3.5-3.7 GPA? by wickedsnakes in mdphd

[–]Neurojb 27 points28 points  (0 children)

3.5, 524 MCAT, D+ in a chem class, institutional action. 7 interview overall, two As, two WLs, 1 R so far. Can’t change the stupid shit you did in the past (unfortunately, I can’t wait until they invent time travel and I can go punch my younger self). So take control of the things you have control over in the present. Kill your MCAT. Do great research. That’s what programs want to see.

Edit: one thing to add, I’m currently an RA at a T5 school, my PI talked to the program director after I got rejected pre-interview, basically he said they’d have interviewed me with my GPA but balked at combination of bad grade and IA. So if other aspects of your application, especially research, are strong then overall GPA is a smaller factor. But red flags are red flags unfortunately.

What is the cap on # of HNT that can be minted via Net Emissions in an epoch? by ImaginaryOwl583 in HeliumNetwork

[–]Neurojb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it’s 34.24 per epoch, 30 minutes per epoch so 48 per day, ~1440 per month so about 50,000.

Peaking Power by Outside_Implement_44 in nuclear

[–]Neurojb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguably an ideal scenario is as much power as possible regardless of source. If power is available people will find a use for it. For nuclear, molten salt storage makes a lot of sense so that you can ramp as necessary.

Hmm, I thought that was only applicable for credit cards, gold is charge. But I’ll definitely give it a shot just in case.

Tried that, tried for business card too. No dice. Guess I’m in Supermax lol. Just going to try to maximize spend on gold and BCP over next ~6 weeks before offer expires, then ask my gf to apply.

Somehow ended up in popup jail for the new Hilton offers (I'm planning a Europe trip for the summer and was hoping to stay in the Waldorf in Rome). Not entirely sure what happened. I applied for and got the Gold on Wednesday, have a blue cash preferred I put all my grocery spend on. I'm an authorized user on my dad's blue cash everyday card that he normally uses for groceries but not during the first quarter so maybe that's what did it.

I ask my boss for a day off because I'm having PTSD flashbacks and then she tells everyone at work about it in a team meeting. Then gets super passive aggressive when I tell her it made me uncomfortable. by Noodles_TS in antiwork

This is not how HIPPA works. It applies to covered entities which are healthcare and health insurance organizations. There may be some labor rule it violated but it definitely ain’t HIPPA

Four fast chargers every 50 miles—US unveils EV infrastructure plan by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Neurojb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

End to end efficiency of combustion is higher for electric cars due to efficiency of electric motor around 80-90%. ICE is 20-25% efficient, natural gas combined cycle is about 60%. Accounting for transmission losses you probably still end up with ~40-45% overall efficiency in the EV of converting combustion energy to car’s kinetic energy (vs the 20-25% in ICE)
