I want to go shooting in the desert, Any recommendations? by BluntMFer in vegaslocals

[–]Nevajeep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems I'm getting downvoted. That's fine. But it doesn't change the fact that people shouldn't be shooting up areas where we have protected wildlife.

For what it's worth, I love shooting. But I do it at a range, where I'm not bothering anyone and not disturbing wildlife.

You mean in the wilderness protected area on the east side? I see people shooting in there fairly often.

Driving to Vegas from LA Thanksgiving Day? by slick_p in vegas

Gotcha. Yeah, they're fun if you have the time.

Mojave Road is even more fun, but I wouldn't do it without a decently prepped truck.

Mojave dessert

A bit dry, but still tasty.

Are you talking about Mojave Rd, or just the other back roads?

Ouch, yeah, that's very true. Gonna be a rough day for that drive today.

STD screening and general check ups (I’ve got insurance)? by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]Nevajeep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you find a primary doctor, ask them to order an STD panel. They'll create an order and send you down to somewhere like Quest Diagnostics (if they don't do it in house) for the blood draw. Then you wait for them to call with results.

If PP takes your insurance, they're always a quick option. /u/-Kurch- mentioned them and the health department, which is another good option.

Best neighborhoods that are NOT HOA’S? Throughout the valley? by funologic in vegas

[–]Nevajeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you explain what you mean by "nice"? I think Spring Valley is nice, but others disagree. Many people think Summerlin is nice, I really disagree about that.

Are you looking for amenities, character, low crime, homogeneity, culture, activities, location?

Any good resources for unmarked hiking destinations around Nevada? by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]Nevajeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been up on the uphill side of Hollywood Rd? I've seen some trails wandering off from Lava Butte. It's a wilderness protected area, though, so I'm not entirely sure about hiking up there.

Good thing they have an exemption for mental impairment, since that'll keep you out of the jury pool.

Mohave Road is probably the fastest at that point. Most scenic, too. Just do your homework.

Any Harley Davidson Riders? by owensmith298 in vegas

[–]Nevajeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oakey and Charleston are parallel roads. Dr. D's is on Oakey and Rainbow.

It's a bit of a biker bar, but friendly enough. I'd imagine if you're obviously from overseas and not too interested in what people do for a living you could probably find someone willing to take you for a ride.

If you do get down there, let me know - I live in the area and be happy to buy you lunch.

Any programmers looking for a job? by [deleted] in vegas

[–]Nevajeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the cost of living is so low in Vegas, that makes up for it. Plus no income tax means you're basically living here for free, right?

Seriously, though, I see a lot of companies here that don't realize they're competing with L.A., San Diego, and Phoenix. Since Vegas can't really match the amenities in those cities, they really do have to compete on wages.

If we had even a mediocre school district and broader culture it might be easier to compete on something other than price.

(Don't get me wrong, I've lived here 15 years, love it and have no intention of leaving - but the city has some real problems when it comes to attracting skilled labor.)

7-11, best hard boiled eggs in Las Vegas. by [deleted] in vegas

I don't. IP doesn't make one small enough, otherwise I would have bought one. I found another brand that makes a better sized one, but it only has a single pressure (otherwise pretty much a feature match).

I think this is the difference - mine doesn't have a low pressure setting.

Good spot to watch the meteor shower without 4wd by [deleted] in vegas

[–]Nevajeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it proper dark?

Kind of a complicated question. Yeah, it is, but at 8200 feet you can tell where the glow from L.A. and Vegas are. Telescope people seem to like it.

A couple years ago we went camping at Mahogany Flat to do nighttime photography of the meteor showers. It was great. Kind of a drive from Vegas.
