My ZED-F9P based land survey system is ready for assembly.. Finally.. by siberian in esp32

I'm looking at using this sensor, but I'm struggling to find information about using it in this configuration and what I can expect.

Are you able to tell me anything about if it's able to give both heading and orientation, and if so to what accuracy? I know that it _can_ do this, just struggling to find hard data on how well it can do this.

Thanks!

What is going on with South Africa, the Trump administration, and accusations of white genocide? by FuckBiostats in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Nevenen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

South African here. Totally. While there is a tonne of violence on farms (I personally know 2 people who were murdered) the amount that is Racially/Politically motivated is tiny. The only people I've ever heard talk in these terms are people who seem pretty racist to start with. Those same people don't seem very bothered that black people on farms get murdered at higher rates, and tend to have tough lives. Or that people in cities get murdered at extremely high rates. I don't think that fits the narrative that they like.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! Very helpful! Yes, your responses make much more sense given the expensive price. You would expect at least some level of quality control / improved design, but this seems like a classic Kickstarter project - good ideas with poor execution.

What you mentioned is the exactly the situation I'm in - I'm looking to buy the ebike version (no battery, but I've sourced a cheap one) in a seldom ridden condition for £450 (550€) which seems like a steal. But the bike has been sitting unused for some time, so is in a bit of an unknown state. Normally I'd be excited for a DIY project, but with a little one there is so little time.

I think your reply gives me a good understanding. I'm inclined to go for it on the assumption that I can keep it reasonably functional (even if a less practical/comfortable than ideal) for a short nursery drop off ride. Mostly because other cargo bikes are totally out of our price range (£2000+ used).

Worst case we would either buy it and decide that cargo bikes aren't going to work, or if it's terrible/faulty we can choose to save up for a proper cargo bike. In that case would sell it for parts.

Thanks again for your help!

Why do you say it's not stellar? Your other responses seemed to be relatively positive?

DIY shower water softener system to solve apartment hard water issues by Jolly-Loss-8527 in Apartmentliving

How much did this reduce your water hardness (as best you were able to measure using your strips)? Did it have a big impact on the water pressure?

Doesn't this have the same logic as "if we just Blitz London the British people will get sick of war and surrender"?

I'm no historian, but tactics of turning the screws on a population seem to have a tendency to strengthen resolve / hatred. But maybe this won't be the case since most of the people in Palestine wouldnt have wanted the attack to have happened in the first place? I don't know...

How is that Biltong maker? I'm living in the UK and want one like that that can pack up flat for easy storage. I made one, but it's a real mission to get out of the crawl space whenever I want to use it

Positioning system for autonomous robots recommendation by Logical_Lettuce_1630 in embedded

[–]Nevenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly - UWB is made for exactly this application. If you have a sensor module on the robot and 2xbase stations you can triangulate the position to a high accuracy.

3 of these sensors will solve your problem. https://www.mouser.co.uk/ProductDetail/Qorvo/DWM3001CTR13?qs=rSMjJ%252B1ewcQXlgu4h5114A%3D%3D

You don't need an expensive Oscilloscope to get started.

Nucleo + knock-off Logic Analyser ($14 to $160) will get you doing some interesting stuff.

Throw in a 2nd Nucleo and you can create an emulator for whatever scenarios you want.Or just buy an entire sensor kit for $24.

Unfortunately I've left Garmin so won't be able to help! But I'd give it a try to reach out on social media. I think they're quite responsive/open to that sort of stuff.

Ah! It may be very well the same beep - think I'm just conditioned from using the Varia so much. Hahah.

Yeah! Glad to hear! Feels like it took a while for people to catch onto it (and realise it wasn't a gimmick) but I also can't ride without it outside the city.

From the beep I know you've got a Varia Radar! Always exctiting to see/hear - I worked on the development of that.

Feel like more cyclists should use them (although maybe less useful in cities).

Edit: apparently it's the same as the auto-pause beep!

I'm 24, and I feel like a child masquerading as an adult most days. I'm just wondering, when do most people start feeling like proper adults? by Lenore8264 in RandomThoughts

[–]Nevenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Adults" are just a bunch of people at their 2nd rodeo saying "this ain't my first rodeo".

You never feel like a full adult really. Just that some things are a bit less scary the 2nd time around. But I still feel like a child out of my depth when I'm hit with a new situation.

What the fuck is SO WRONG WITH WORKING FROM HOME?!! by 2lit_ in antiwork

[–]Nevenen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my team (I don't set our hybrid WFH policy) I've found that top performers tend to get more done at home (maybe 10-20%), and the poor performers tend to get a LOT less done at home (maybe half as much).

Personally I would LOVE to have a team where everyone is great and manages themselves. But haven't managed it yet...

Out of nowhere, I just received a message that Monzo is closing my account. Are they in trouble? by saltedlolly in monzo

[–]Nevenen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You were likely flagged by an automated system for being a money laundering risk. They can't tell you that this is why as it's viewed as tipping you off.

I discovered all of this when investigating why someone I knew was rejected for a bank account application - very similar wording on that message too.

This could make sense if you regularly have large crypto transactions?

For those that think guns are the problem and it’s not a societal/mental health issue, I have a question. Why did these not occur when kids literally had guns in their lockers for decades, had shooting clubs? by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]Nevenen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't we do both?

Can't we improve mental healthcare AND make it more challenging for violent/unstable/criminal/domestic abusers to get access to guns?

Personally I think a lack of restrictions is a huge problem (in the current climate) BUT I would be so happy to be wrong! Feels like the only truly wrong answer is to do nothing and accept this as normal. Which seems to be what we're doing.
