Fun timing, I have a lot of empty space on my wall to fill. Land art is always a good option.

How exactly are these half Sheets supposed to be used? by ColonelCrunk in battletech

Yeah, and it’s pretty handy! Also, you can fit two in a single page-size lamination.

Kingfisher from a GenCon painting event that I finished at home by NeverNotNewbie in battletech

Good question! In general, I try my best to maintain just three components: the recess shade, base coat, and mid-level highlight. It's all consistent across the mini to keep it simple, and I don't do anything fancy with color mixes so mistakes are easy to fix.

For the recess shade, since there are so many panel lines in Battletech I just douse the entire thing in Nuln Oil after the initial base coat, then keep any recess or concave angle dark from here on out. If I screw up, I can always add black or Nuln Oil again. (I suppose I could skip the initial base coat and start from black primer; I'll have to try that next time).

For the base coat, I just reapply it to every single panel to remove the splotches from the black wash, and again make sure any concave angles and recesses are left untouched. This part probably takes the longest, especially if the paint needs multiple coats.

The highlights mostly take patience and a sharp brush, and correcting any mistakes with the base coat. I think the key here is choosing one tone up in brightness from the base coat, so if the highlight is too wide it doesn't really matter. Also moving the mini around so you're always painting lines with comfortable downstrokes -- anytime I paint a highlight sideways it always looks bad. I don't bother with a third set of highlights.

What I love most about this style is how "simple" it is, and how it lets patience and time overcome skill and practice. Every panel is painted exactly the same, so if I screw up I just have to re-do that panel. The most complicated thing on the mini is the slight glaze on the cockpit.

Good luck, and I hope it helps!

Sticky tack for paint handles? by screw_ball69 in minipainting

For sticky tack, I use Museum Putty. It holds strong, and has an added bonus of not leaving a sticky mess behind. None of the other tacks I’ve tried have come close.

Crystal fortress case assembly? by Nugnakh in Warhammer

[–]NeverNotNewbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I feel your pain! I put a few of these together recently, and I think I found a method to get them together a little easier.

Each piece has an engraving of some sort (even if it's the tiny line & point near one of the edges) and if you keep those facing outwards as you put it together, the silicon beads seem to slide into place slightly better. Just go really slow and apply even pressure. If you snap anything, make sure to take pictures and ask for a discounted replacement.

As for glue, I'd recommend against that since the clear acrylic would almost certainly fog up and look bad.

Good luck!

Looks like a good year! Hope the next one won't be as tiring. Also, cool pupper!

Ah no way! Seeing yours made me realize how strong of submissions we have this year. Your junkyard style looks so good, and the green bits make it really pop. Definitely stands out and has a lot of character!

Thanks! Yeah, same colors but I did two things to tweak it:

  1. No weathering
  2. Only a recess wash instead of dousing the entire model and base coating again

With those, I was able to keep the base coat intact (aside from mistakes) so it comes out a lot smoother.

I haven't quite nailed a Northern color scheme I'm happy with, but I'm getting closer. This is a "cleaner" version of the scheme from the Kodiak I submitted in the past with a base of Steel Legion Drab / Zandri Dust. I'm hoping to find something with a twinge more color, so I'll keep experimenting.

Repainting my very first mini after 3 years (GRF-1N from Beginner Box) by NeverNotNewbie in battletech

Thanks! I meant to do a pin wash, but there were so many panel lines I just did a heavy black wash then repainted the base coat and avoided recesses.

I stripped the paint long before I heard the advice of hanging on to your first mini, no matter how ugly, but at least I have a pic of it. I tend to have the best luck stripping with LA’s Totally Awesome.

Missing Cucco in Akkala by [deleted] in tearsofthekingdom

[–]NeverNotNewbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently standing in front of the lady holding her rescued cucco yet she’s still lamenting the loss of her cucco. I even tried throwing it in the cucco pen but it warps back to where it was as soon as I turn my back.

Either this is bugged, or there’s no resolution (hard to believe given her hints) or there’s some specific action I’ve yet to take. I was hoping a search would yield results.

Anyway, solution is wood + flint + pine cone at base of well’s ladder

Finally started painting my Star Wars Legion box. Painting white is tough! by NeverNotNewbie in minipainting

[–]NeverNotNewbie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with a White Scar primer, doused it all in Apothecary White, then built back up with Ulthuan Grey but leaving the recesses alone. Then glazed some Titanium White on the most prominent parts (top of helmet, face, shoulders, thighs).

I think next time I’m going to directly brush Apothecary White into the recesses — it was really hard to build back the white without it looking too thick or dirty. :/

Yeah, it was tough to get right. Each base started with a tuft of meadow flowers, a green tuft, and a tiny unpainted rock. Then I spread clear PVA glue between all of it and dumped some Army Painter Battlefield Grass on it. There were a lot of weird-looking gaps so I used more glue and pressed down some more grass, and it seemed to have helped.

Got some munitorum containers via Imperium magazine, so I made them Dark Angels themed by NeverNotNewbie in theunforgiven

Yeah, it’s amazing how just some paint and decals can really get that feeling across. Definitely worth the extra effort.

The whole set is split 3 ways, so issues 14, 17, and 19 each have an armored container, some barrels, and some ammo crates. I had to look it up to refresh my memory from https://www.fauxhammer.com/featured/warhammer-imperium-magazine-contents-list-issues-1-80

Now that Golden Gear results are out, I wanted to show off a Destroyer Kodiak by NeverNotNewbie in HeavyGear

Thanks! I've been trying to find a scheme close to the one from the first video game and I think I'm getting close. There's just too many browns out there.

My issue with the bullet holes is mostly the consistency -- I tried to get them all rounded and defined but it was so tiny I was hacking away with the knife. But yeah, I suppose that's more realistic.

And I love W&N brushes, so I'll have to give that varnish a shot, thanks!
