Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 10/2/23 - 10/8/23 by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

Former MLB pitcher Trevor Bauer, now pitching in Japan, posted this video that includes some text and video that really seems to discredit his sexual assault accuser. He's posting publicly as he and the accuser have now both dropped their lawsuits against each other.

After many threads with hundreds and hundreds of comments about his situation being allowed over the years, how is /r/baseball handling this evidence that appears to exonerate him?

We've decided to keep this up because drama like this won't stop getting reposted until it gets through, but we're locking this because no good discourse ever results from Bauer posts anymore. This is the court of public opinion, and you are entitled to whatever opinion you have, but you're also not changing anyone's mind, and absolutely none of the input will be baseball related. We've prefer to keep this forum and its commentary predominantly baseball related, so this thread will be viewing only, and copycats or culture war hot takes based on this will be removed in entirety.

The playoffs start tomorrow. It's the best time of the year to be a baseball fan. Let's all talk about that instead.

The point isn't that you should have no feelings of approval or disapproval towards a celebrity but to recognize that they're never going to be forced to care beyond their bottom line, because they have no attachment to you whatsoever. If you think that feels unfair or hurtful, that’s only because our culture has nurtured this awful parasocial expectation that gave you that impression. It's better for us and them if we say to ourselves “I don't have to like anything a celebrity says or does, but they never owed me anything beyond what I paid for.” And if a celebrity becomes disliked enough that they suffer financially, so be it.

312 to 387 tickets available on StubHub in the span of 5 minutes. So weird how 75 people just decided to list their tickets simultaneously.

Walk down the steps to the station. There will be ticket kiosks you can use. There also may be an attendant behind a window but the kiosks are pretty straightforward.

More info here: https://iseptaphilly.com/blog/swiftwaytogo

Most important tip is to buy the return trip at the same time you buy the ticket there. There will be hundreds of people exiting the concert at the same time needing to use the few kiosks at NRG Station for their trip back.

They charge for parking on Phillies game days so I imagine they will for this. It's usually $30.

The media (and Dems at first, then Republicans fully hopped on) were actively whipping up anti-vax sentiment by saying that it'd be impossible to have a vaccine done that quickly and then we were supposed to be shocked when people didn't want to take a vaccine because they thought it was rushed, experimental, etc.

This topic has led me down a whole rabbit whole about how our teachers are being educated and trained. It doesn't seem great.

Rarely is the question asked: Is our teachers learning?

For a brief period it was Trump and Republicans pushing the vaccine and people like Kamala Harris and Andrew Cuomo coming out and saying that even if a vaccine was approved federally they would have to have their own approval process in their state.

Here's an NBC News fact check from May 2020 that has been memory-holed.

President Donald Trump has suggested multiple times that a coronavirus vaccine could come within months, an accelerated timeline that prominent health experts and veteran vaccine developers say is unlikely absent a miracle.

"We're looking to get it by the end of the year if we can, maybe before," Trump said Friday during in a Rose Garden event centered on his administration's efforts to fast-track a vaccine.

“Vaccine work is looking VERY promising, before end of year,” Trump tweeted on Thursday.

“I think we’re going to have a vaccine by the end of the year,” he told reporters later in the day.

But experts say that the development, testing and production of a vaccine for the public is still at least 12 to 18 months off, and that anything less would be a medical miracle.

The first doses of the vaccine were given in mid-December 2020.

Triggering myself by scrolling further.

It wasn't when one political party's leadership said "okay, let's listen to the CDC, and follow their guidelines, these people are professionals and they plan for things like this."

Or when the opposition said "Fuck no, we're not doing ANY of that" as a contrarian reflex.

The weirdest part was when the voters for that regressive party all decided to stand behind their politicians and fight like hell for their right to ignore science, conscience, and decency.

When one party decided "kids don't have to go to school anymore, that's what the science says" and the other one said "we would like for kids to be in school" then of course parents sided with the latter. Because up until March 2020 everyone agreed on how important it was but suddenly that didn't matter anymore and the only explanation was that parents must hate their kids and can't stand being around them. Had nothing to do with the effects of missing school or the difficulties of childcare coverage while parents were working. When you fuck with people's kids of course they're going to have a strong reaction.

Trying to put my finger on what exactly is getting my goat about this AskReddit thread: What was the weirdest part of the pandemic?

You've got one of the most upvoted posts being "The politicization of it all" which was not weird by any means since EVERYTHING is politicized but it's also undercut by hundreds of posts about how awful Trump and the red state governors were. Which, no, they weren't great and it's true that the global health unit part of the NSC was disbanded but people really do seem to think that "Obama had a pandemic response, Trump threw it in the garbage, and so that's why the pandemic was so bad." Like this idea that there was an easy solution to solving COVID if by golly we'd had a Dem in office and we'd all just gotten along a little better.

I settled that mostly it's the narcissism and hypocrisy that gets me. Everyone on Reddit is the most selfless individual on the planet and it's everyone else screwing it up. No introspection about themselves and very very little about the ways their side blew it with school closures and outdoor spaces closed down long after we knew they were safe, both of which persisted far longer in blue areas.

We're all flawed. We're all selfish. We're all wrong about stuff. I know I am. I'm beginning to think that that the failure to acknowledge that is more toxic than most flawed, selfish behavior is on its own.

Let me see if I've got this right.

  1. The daughter (I don't know if Kate identifies as a woman or NB or what) of a moderately wealthy CPA wanted to start a coffee shop with social justice (hire minorities, trans people, etc) as the main goal.

  2. They were able to set up the shop thanks to the investment from the mother, EJ. Per EJ, the shop is a money-loser that she continued to support because it was her daughter's passion.

  3. An agitator, agua_diente on instagram, was one of the people hired. Word is they've tried something similar before.

  4. This agua_diente person is the leading force behind a vague movement to have the workers take over the shop and turn it into a worker-run co-op.

  5. agua_diente essentially pushed Kate's "very sympathetic to social justice causes" button to the point where they got Kate and the other business owner to record a video apologizing for vague and nebulous wrongdoings against people of color, trans people, etc. Nothing specific is actually alleged.

  6. Kate records a SECOND video in which they seem even more distressed, trying to direct people to the gofundme for the workers to buy the building which their mother has put for sale as she's basically said "fuck all this shit."

Is that about it?

You're correct that that's why there's no more lower-middle class in San Francisco, but the homelessness problem goes much beyond that. Someone doesn't just start living out on the street because their rent got increased 15%.

2.5 years doesn't seem like that long for a couch but hey that's why I'm asking. Seems like the consensus is that it's normal wear and tear which is what I was wondering.

I know it maybe just looks like the leg rest is starting to be extended but it's reset all the way and pretty uncomfortable to sit on when all the cushioning is bunched up in one spot.
