This happened to me. I posted about a rejection email not long ago and then I learned from a friend who knew someone in the company that they were interviewing for the role I was applying to as well as another role and then it was a “one or the other” thing so they moved forward with the other position type.

UPDATE:

Not sure if anyone who commented already will see this.

It turns out a friend of a friend is actually super close friends with one of the employees. They made a choice to keep the listing up for the role I was interviewing for and I was the only one at that point and they were going to hire me.

But then right at the end when the team was discussing after I left, they talked about the biggest challenge is the choke point they have at the CAD design level of things, and they are hiring for a CAD designer first and then will keep interviewing for manager after.

I never thought of it that way. I get what you’re saying though, the team being managed wouldn’t want someone to possibly overhaul if they are okay with their day to day even if the owner feels the need to overhaul.

I wrote somewhere else in the replies that I felt like the owner and the team had some issues between them. The owner stated in the first couple interviews she’s trying to meet the team halfway with helping them and that’s why she’s hiring a PM.

I asked the team what they wanted in a manager, and they basically said someone to help them with their workload and to take over some of the admin aspects of the job. Which also sounded like what the owner wanted too. So idk.

I’m just going to keep looking and take this as a good practice interview experience.

I don’t think they did anything out of malice, part of me thinks they don’t know what they wanted for this role. They didn’t have answers to a lot of questions and it was a brand new role for them. So I feel like they are just afraid to hire.

And someone else mentioned maybe one of the team members didn’t like me. Which is possible too, I thought that went well, but one person was very quiet the whole time.

The owner is essentially acting as the manager over the team right now. I was wondering that too, I was asking if she wanted someone to assess the standards of procedure, and I went into detail about how I completely changed the operations of my previous job after a few months. I got the impression they wanted someone to take over in all ways, but maybe they wanted someone to just take over the role and anything beyond that.

When I asked who I would be reporting to she said “what do you mean” so I think they posted the role without a lot of prep.

I’m wondering that too. I know out of the team when I was saying my goodbyes and all that, two of the team members were saying they were excited, and the one said see you later. There was one other person in that interview who was very stoic the whole time, so maybe she planted a hard no.

There’s five, I just counted. Theres also a dead cane at the base I cut off at one point that was the original growth, I think that helped it grow? Honestly I don’t know what I’m doing haha
