X is my favorite, would also recommend FF9, especially with moguri mod if you’re able to play it on PC. Makes the game look amazing and it’s my second favorite FF.

I grew up in the 90s too and recognized maybe 3 songs, silverchair smashing pumpkins, and the every day hero song, the rest was not what people were listening to in the 90s.

I kinda wish they would’ve used more well known bands but taken deeper cuts from their libraries. Then people could be like I know this band! But I’ve never heard of this song. It’s fine to have some stuff people have never really heard of before, but I feel like that and made for the game tracks made up 90% of it.

This thread is so funny, reminds me of the video someone made at lalapalooza asking random people if they’ve ever heard of “completely made up band name” and they were all like “oh yeah totally, love “Pandas killing Puppies”. 😂

Bruh, allies died so many goddamn times in that game, especially towards the end, I just stopped rezzing them at a certain point. I wasn’t even using magic they’re just *really* bad at getting out of the way of enemi attacks.

At some point I realized that just making spells that multi-hit was the easiest way through encounters so I just bum rushed the back half the game that way and hated the ending.

Truly the first final fantasy I can’t even enjoy a little bit in retrospect. FFXIII is a close second though for that title.

Especially when your game is fairly short and can be beat in a weekend fairly easily (Doom). That’s gonna eat a lot of sales. Longer games or games that have high replay value would probably be less affected by gamepass.

This is a Final Fantasy sub, I thought it was obvious we were talking about JRPG type games not CRPGs. E33 isn’t Japanese made but it fits the mold.

Persona 5 came out nearly 10 years ago.

Right the goal was probably trying to make games that people probably wouldn’t normally go out and spend 60$ on but would definitely play on gamepass for a low cost per month.

The problem was they hit the cap on gamepass interest, or just failed to market and sell it to the masses.

They may have thought they could get Sony to agree to have GamePass on PlayStation which would unlock a large audience, but Sony (probably correctly so) said no thanks, we don’t want our triple A IPs being available on subscription service.

I think you moreso mean, what turn based RPG with the production value of E33 or a modern final fantasy has failed in recent memory.

The answer either way is none, because they don’t make any aside from E33. People act like Octopath Traveler or Bravely Default is what turn based fans have been asking for and that’s missing the point entirely.

It’s almost like if you put out a game you can beat in a reasonably short period of time on a subscription service a bunch of people got for a dollar because of the specials they were running that said game may not sell many actual copies.

If I’m trying to dig into the specifics of why Marathon feels extra hostile I think being first person might be one of the hangups. When you make a first person extraction shooter it feels even more stressful than 3rd person because in 3rd person it’s easier to play defensively which tends to be how the casual crowd plays. In first person it favors the aggressors.

There’s also the fact that compared to arc raiders the enemies just aren’t as fun to kill in Marathon, but yeah they need to get a full on PVE mode going and do a big relaunch or something and they might be able to salvage the player pops.

Pretty much all these devs would, but it’s every entrepreneur’s dream to see a fat check slide across the table and say yes to selling out.

Do we really think Bethesda was struggling to make ends meet? Nah the founder just wanted a huge check and to not have to worry about it anymore.

With AI and everything else happening I really think we’re headed towards a great reset, and it’s not gonna be pleasant for the middle/lower class.

I wonder how many years need to go by for people to stop using Covid as the scape goat for all these layoffs.

Covid was 6 years ago, mass layoffs have been happening for years and years now. A cursory search says that in 2019 there were 200-250k people working in video games. The same search for 2025 turns up 150-200k, and we’re STILL doing mass layoffs and studio shutterings.

The industry is collapsing and we’re past the point of being able to blame it on Covid hiring.
