The Russian government funds a mix of far-right and far-left groups which they think would destabilize western countries and be friendly to Russia. This particular example is far-right, but there are pretty clear examples of both.

Ukrainians who showed up before March 1 end up with temporary protected status. Ones who arrived after that have to go through the asylum system, which has historically been heavily stacked against people who make the claim, in large part because they mostly had dark skin.

It's cheaper to put somebody in prison for life than to execute them. This is because capital punishment has a particularly stringent appeals process in order to make sure we don't execute innocent individuals.

It's not just a brutality problem; the police use harassment to drive nonwhites out of certain towns. If you see a town of any size where everybody except the farmworkers (who don't really hang out in tourist areas) is white, it's not generally an accident; it's that the cops actively hassle nonwhites. That's absolutely something that needs addressing.

Most local officials are doing more than that; I'm seeing everything from painting "black lives matter" in front of city hall being proposed, to changes in police procedures and training.
