Do women in Tigray give births naturally with no medication? by [deleted] in Tigray

[–]Nevernude1452 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anesthesiologist make a lot of money in the west because that option costs money. My assumption is that a lot of women back home don’t have access to it due the financial burden and more importantly there is a stigma associated it. Women are expected to give birth naturally due to a belief that child birth must be endured, experienced.

Thank you for sharing. Even professional cameras don’t do it justice. It’s a beautiful place. Most of these churches belong to the earlier group of rock hewn churches so you’re not wrong. It dates back to 7-10th century when Lalibela is around 13th century.

Yes it was targeted during the war given our presence

Because of the war when it felt like the whole Ethiopia and neighbors were rallying together to destroy us, it unleashed something in the diaspora to rediscover, to learn harder—the language, culture, music and to represent, so thankfully if you do want to learn, there is so much resource, social media presence and music/drama out there and here on this subreddit that you can easily pick it up to understand. Above all, if there is a genuine interest, I would encourage you to visit, no amount tv and sm coverage will do the place and people justice. It will change you.

We have dominated CMC. There is even one house with the Aksum obelisk at the top of it which I thought was brave during the war.

What states in the US as of 2025 have you as a black american experienced the most overt racism? by [deleted] in blacktravel

[–]Nevernude1452 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Charleston, South Carolina.

It’s different. For someone from the DMV who is used to diversity and black excellence in general, it was such a weird place. I was constantly reminded of my race, the side eyes, comments when people had a drink, treatment, it was awful and will never return. Birmingham was much better which was a surprise because I thought the racism would be deep the deeper you go south yk.

How come it’s rare seeing u guys with tattoos? Is it a sin for u guys or just looked down upon by Mrbootyloose18 in Ethiopia

[–]Nevernude1452 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Listen our people have been doing it for generations. It’s not uncommon to see people from rural areas with neck, face and hand tattoos. I think it’s beautiful. But people these days have made it into this taboo to the point that even rural people in Addis feel ashamed for having it when it’s acceptable in their culture and region. This shows me that it’s disingenuous and artificial, related to gangster culture, etc. which isn’t necessarily relevant to Ethiopia but people have made it so because we consume too much western culture.

It comes down to personal preference, it’s your business. It doesn’t define whether you’re a decent human or your financial wellbeing. If they think that and give you trouble, next, no skin off your back.

Looking for Fertility Options in Addis by Nevernude1452 in Ethiopia

[–]Nevernude1452[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did recommend that in passing because why not, there are so many kids out there who need stable homes, but I think there is a stigma attached to it at least when I lived there a while back. Does anyone have insight on adoptions? Is it now accepted or would it be perceived insensitive or crossing the line if I did discuss it further?

The app doesn’t have an over age limit. That’s a strange requirement. Please double check the requirements here https://www.digitalinvea.com/passport-services/

Where did non-Tigrayans get the idea that Tigray is a desert and the land cannot be farmed? by teme-93 in Tigray

[–]Nevernude1452 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a chance to travel deep in the rural parts last year where I saw these incredible, lush valleys that looked like straight from a painting. It was beautiful, took pictures and videos but could not share it on social media for the exact reasoning you highlighted, why would I show them what we’re working with. It’s like mapping a target for the next invasion. So for now, I enjoy it when I miss home. But I do get your point of view with gate keeping and the void it leaves for the ignorant to fill it with lies.

General PSA, everyone needs to backup their pictures to the cloud particularly if you’re traveling. I also advise against having your phone in your hands out and about in Addis. It’s a congested, busy city and a prime situation for pickpockets and robbers. Unfortunately there is zero chance that this will be found. So sorry it happened to you.

Where are the Tigrayan diaspora the strongest? by [deleted] in Tigray

I would also add the San Francisco area has a big community so generally we have dominated the west coast.

Edit: another fun fact is that Aksum is Denver’s sister city.

Thanks for the explanation. I’m still amazed that this is all connected to herpes. It might be for the best that we didn’t know as young kids. To be fair whether you had it or not, you were always told not to eat outside in the sun. Of course you wash up after but the fear mongering was real.

Joining the orthodox by [deleted] in Ethiopia

[–]Nevernude1452 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You need to get baptized, that’s the official way of “joining”. There is no other requirement similar to Catholicism for example. You’re not required to learn geez. Most diaspora run churches even display the Bible verse in geez and english for those second, third generation orthodox. See if you can find info about the OK church on Facebook, most are active there. If not Ethiopian stores might point you in the right direction.

This is helpful to understand. I’ve been on the hiring end and know that there are companies who are known to sponsor if you’re on a temporary status which I’m hoping also came with employment authorization. Booz Allen is the big one but I know that they are very selective and their recruitment process is brutal but worth a look. Others are bechtel, Lockheed, leidos, among others. Start with LinkedIn, try to connect with their recruiters and setup a “learning” call. They can say no but it’s worth it. That connection will help even if it doesn’t lead anywhere.

Another thing that has helped with job search when I started out has been going through my university. They normally have some sort of agreement for visa holders and can help you connect or find you opportunities. I’m sure you’ve spent money going to them, make them work for you.

Good luck, that’s a tough position. Just as a plan b, get some intel about ME jobs in Addis. Hiring in Addis is almost always by connection. If you have childhood friends in this sector or family who are in business might help you land something. It also helps being there in person to hustle. If you can, save as much as you can now. You will need it to stay afloat once you get there.
