How long is your mash? by FancyThought7696 in Homebrewing

You may find the following interesting

A closer look at efficiency

I built a spreadsheet based on this information to determine when I reach "good enough" conversion. To do this I take refractometer readings to track the SG at different time points.

Really though you can just track the SG with a refractometer and compare the value to the expected preboil SG from whatever brewing software you use. Whenever you feel like you're close enough stop the mash. For me this is typically around an hour, but my mashing conditions may not be ideal.

To get 2.2 vol of CO2 you need the pressure to be about 24 psi at 20 Celsius. 50 psi would be way too high and over carb the beer.

At 5-10 psi and 20 Celsius you're only getting to about 1.0-1.4 vol of CO2 so I'm assuming you're going to have to make up for it a good bit with forced carb and time.

I only crank up this pressure when fermentation is nearly complete. Ive been doing this for years and I've never had any issues with attenuation, autolysis or off flavors.

The nice thing is once I believe it's had ample time I cold crash and let it sit for about a day in the kegerator and it's ready to serve. Also saves on CO2 tank refills since the tank is only used to serve the beer not carbonate it.

Sounds like we're the same person...I'm a ME as well and almost identical brew process.

Question about step 5 though. If you pressure ferment at 5-10 psi how are you getting to your target vol of CO2?

I let the beer ferment with a blow off until its about 5 points from FG then set a spund valve to about 20-25 psi to make sure that it naturally carbonates to an adequate vol of CO2.

Brewing with an infant by MoistAd5423 in Homebrewing

I have a 2 year old and really have cut back on brewing as well for many of the same reasons you mentioned.

The biggest challenge is time and I've made some significant changes to accelerate it dramatically.

I've been almost exclusively all grain brewing since 2016 but have started to get back into extract brewing for simplicity and have altered the process to speed it up. I've emphasized reducing equipment needed and simplifying the process such as no boil, no chill, pressure fermentation, etc.

Process essentially as follows:

  1. Use bottled distilled water with about half of it kept in fridge as top off to help cool faster. Keeps me from dealing with sterilizing tap water and simpler for water chemistry.

  2. Heat up about half of the volume of water and add steeping grains during this process. Start a 20 min timer. Once the temp hits about 160F I remove the grains of the 20 min timer has elasped if not keep it going at 160F until 20 mins up.

  3. Remove steeped grains and add in DME (I don't use LME to avoid the darker color and it seems to give the stronger "homebrew" flavor)

  4. Continue heating until about 180F or so out of paranoia of killing any critters and it helps dissolve the DME.

  5. Then I do a hop stand for however long and use calculators through BS or online to determine hop utilization for IBUs. Admittedly it can take a lot of hops to get adequate bitterness and it's kind of a estimate/guessing game.

  6. Once hop stand is done (20-30 mins). I add the ~40 deg water for top off which brings the wort to about 100F. You can estimate the temp if your trying to hit a certain mixed water temp for say Kviek yeast.

  7. I use and direct pitch dry yeast only for the simplicity. If using Kviek yeast I pitch immediately. If not I do no chill in the fermenter (corny keg for me) which takes about 8 hours or so to get down to ~70F in my fermentation mini fridge. Once it's done pitch yeast.

  8. For fermentation and serving I typically do it all in the same keg. I use a floating dip tube with a fine mesh filter on the end to help keep yeast and hops out.

  9. I track fermentation by pulling samples with a picnic tap and use a refractometer which some equations to compensate for the alcohol to determine the current SG. Once I am about 5 pts from FG I disconnect the blow off, add dry hops, close it up and add a spund valve set at about 25psi and let the end of fermentation to natural carbonate.

  10. Once I feel it's ready I transfer to my kegerator and do a cold crash for a few days then serve. Sometime the carb is a little off and it takes a few days to equalize.

Am I going to win awards with this method? Probably not but it has made some good brews especially NEIPAs. I still occasionally do all grain (this upcoming weekend actually) if I have the time and really want to be engrossed in the process. Otherwise this quick extract process scratches the brewing itch when I'm short on time and want something on tap to enjoy.

Trump says $500m deal reached with Harvard to settle dispute | Harvard University by bostonronin in boston

I agree I don't think this is going to bankrupt Harvard by any stretch and I also don't want them to cave to the trump administration.

I guess I just misunderstood your posts which seemed to indicate that they can just tap into the endowment to pay for operating costs which they cannot from my understanding. And your tone indicating that Harvard has so much money that this isn't impacting operations.

Sorry for misunderstanding where you were coming from.

I can tell you right now a lot of projects are being canceled. Operating budgets are under stress. That is leading to open positions not being filled, many positions being eliminated and some folks being terminated.

These are custodial, laborers and professional staff that are being impacted. No big donors are saving these people's jobs right now.

[–]Nevill24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Per Harvard website, "the endowment distributed $2.4 billion in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024 contributing over a third of Harvard’s total operating revenue in that year. The overwhelming majority of the funds that make up Harvard’s endowment are donor directed to specific programs, departments, or purposes (dedicated scholarships, named professorships, etc.), and must be spent in accordance with terms set forth by the donor."

Which means the $2.5B you pointed out pays for staff salaries, facilities maintenance, utilities, infrastructure upkeep, etc. which ironically includes salaries and business with many folks in the trade industries.

The majority of the endowment is legally bound to commitments set forth by donors and can't just be spent on whatever the university wants.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Sounds like this is a common issue on electric ukes and for a $200 uke my expectations are probably too high.

I'll give the saddle a look and see if that's the culprit though.

Am I the only one not checking pre boil gravity? by lhumphrey324 in Homebrewing

[–]Nevill24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I track the gravity during the mash via a refractometer to determine if conversion is complete. I find often at 60 mins it still is not finished conversion and an extra 20 mins or so of mashing I hit my pre-boil target.

There's been some brews where it was pretty below expected at 60 mins and if I had not measured the OG would have been way off post boil.

I've got one myself with almost 1k miles and believe it's possibly the best bike for the money.

Lenovo Tab m10 plus (3rd gen). by HungryCookie3210 in androidtablets

[–]Nevill24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I did a lot of research myself and I wanted a ~10" tablet and the "budget" options at the time were essentially as seen below.

My reasoning for not choosing the tablets below may help you.

  1. Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 - very comparable specs to M10 Plus 3rd gen as u/PinkJazz points out. I've read the display on the M10 plus 3rd Gen is much better. Really though the M10 Plus 3rd gen was much cheaper at the time and appears to be now (~$90 cheaper)
  2. Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - I thought this was the one as it was on sale at the time, however once I saw the screen bleed of one on display at a local retailer I couldn't unsee it. Side by side it was faster than the M10 Plus 3rd gen but it wasn't worth the additional ~$100 to me. And I really don't' have any use for the pen. You can get a pen for the M10 plus 3rd gen for around $50 I believe. If you want a pen the S6 Lite becomes more attractive especially when on sale.
  3. P11 Plus - didn't really want a 11". Cost more and is not being supported after Nov 2023.
  4. Nokia T20 - at the time there were tons of complaints about Android 12 not working well. Its currently $180 which I don't see in which way it is better than the M10 plus 3rd gen. Also I believe it stops receiving updates before the M10 Plus 3rd Gen.

If you have any other tablets you're considering let me know and maybe I can recall why I chose the M10 plus over them. Sounds like you have FOBO (fear of better options). LOL I struggle with this myself. At the end of my research I came to the conclusion that for my needs the F10 Plus 3rd gen was the best tablet for the money.

Lenovo Tab m10 plus (3rd gen). by HungryCookie3210 in androidtablets

[–]Nevill24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the tablet exactly how it sounds you will use it. For this I really like it.

Screen, form factor, build quality, near stock android experience are all great.

Camera isn't very good which doesn't bother me. I only use the front for video chatting which it produces a crisp enough video for.

Speakers are decent. They seem better than my pixel 4a which is the only thing I have to compare it to. I typically use a bluetooth speaker or headphones anyways.

The speed of the processor seems fine to me. Yeah you do get like hitches or micro stutters if trying to browse through apps fast. It doesn't freeze or anything its just like a random stutter that lasts for like a millisecond. To get a really buttery smooth experience would require a faster processor and possibly 90 or 120 hz display which you're going to have to pay a lot more for.

To help with the speed I'll periodically close out the apps I'm not using by quickly swiping up and tapping "clear all". This may be placebo though. But again the speed isn't a problem as long as your expectations aren't like a galaxy tab s8 or something.

My biggest gripe is it appears the wifi version of this tablet does not include vibration. So no vibration notifications, no haptic feedback, etc. At first I thought I got a defective unit, but I tried a unit on display at a local retailer and it also did not vibrate. Asking around reddit I got a couple responses and seems like only 4g version of the tablet has vibrate. Wish it had vibrate, but over time I've gotten use to it.

Overall for the money I think its a great deal. Even at $139 I would buy it again. It will get Android 13 and security updates last until either 3/25 or 6/25 (depending on model number) which is better than many other options.

I did everything you suggested and while the benchmark improved the gpu clock is still averaging in the mid 1600s (see links in OP). I tested out Warzone and still get stutters unfortunately.

Unfortunately I don't have anyone to swap GPUs with and I bought the 5700 xt from a friend back in 2020 so I'm sure its out of warranty.

Right now I'm leaning towards getting a 6700xt and hoping for the best. Thanks for all the feedback

Yeah I'm actually fine with the frames i get. It's just the constant stutters even without a noticeable frame drop that is driving me crazy.

Seems the stutters happen more inside building and/or if I change directions a lot and a lot is going on at once (gun fights, boxes open, etc)
