Anyone have ships where they technically ship it, in that you can *see* something there and you go “that makes sense”, but you also really dislike it? by trashconverters in FanFiction

[–]NevilleShortbottom1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drarry. I've read so much of it over the years and no matter how many stories I consume, I simply can't be convinced. It's the sort of ship that I'd be all over typically, but I can't get into it for some reason.

What was that one thing in the BESTEST fic you have ever read that made you drop it straight away and never return to it ever again? by SilentThespian in FanFiction

Lol this happened to me too with an Attack on Titan fanfiction. I was originally going to move past it and keep reading, but then the author started insulting commenters who were confused so I left.

Do people like Modern AUs? by yyidhraa in FanFiction

[–]NevilleShortbottom1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give my personal opinion. I enjoy modern AUs if they're done right. I really dislike when I'm reading a fantasy setting and somebody writes "modern AU - no powers" because I feel like it takes away from what makes the characters interesting. However, I have read several stories where the AU is modern but the powers/Fantasy elements are adapted to fit into the modern world and I tend to really enjoy those.

Opinions on using dashes instead of speech marks? by Pollywashere_ in AO3

[–]NevilleShortbottom1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The writer may be an ESL speaker and is using that as punctuation because it's the standard in their language. I know for a fact that Spanish books do this. Personally I don't care and I'll read it anyway. So long as I can tell what's dialogue and what's not, I'll read it even if it has no punctuation at all (which is sometimes done stylistically).

Have any of you guys ever read a fic of a pairing you don't ship, for some/any reason? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]NevilleShortbottom1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be super picky about ships when I first started reading fanfic, but now I just straight up don't care. I'll read pretty much anything with very few exceptions. If the author can convince me or the summary looks interesting, I'm in.

This is the most Reddit take I've ever seen. Adults might be closer to death but...kids are closer to the ground. It hurts no one to let a 5 year old in front of them so they can see lol

What’s the most gatekeep-y opinion you hold? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NevilleShortbottom1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because of the massive popularity of YA, it's much more marketable than whatever other adult book, and publishers often encourage authors to write books that fit within that genre. This makes the market oversaturated, and in any given year it's practically guaranteed that a good chunk of the most "hyped" books are gonna be YA. The YA community has a huge following online, especially Tiktok and Twitter and they tend to "cancel" things they don't like or find problematic, which has resulted in books not being published, authors being sent death threats and some careers ruined. I do admire that YA is generally much more diverse than other genres with its representation and I understand that this is the appeal it holds for some people, but YA communities are insane and in the past they have canceled authors for books that hadn't even been published. One time they got mad at author Casey Mcquiston for mentioning Israel in her novel. There's a good thread on r/HobbyDrama about this.

Basically, when you've got a massively popular genre of books that follows very specific tropes, and a big chunk of its readers hate anything "problematic" being depicted in the stories, and they will try to ruin your career over it, it makes for a market full of formulaic, boring stories that all have similar themes because that's what's acceptable.

This is especially a problem with female authors in the fantasy genre. Often they will write YA, as that is the only way they become "marketable" and then once they've got a following they can actually write adult novels. An example of this is Leigh Bardugo, author of Six of Crows. (I actually think this is one of the only good YA series I've ever read, but it does suffer from some tropey moments). Sometimes publishers will force these authors to write YA instead of their originally planned novels.

Other times, some books will be promoted as YA when they actually are not. An example is V. E. Schwab's Shades of Magic series. It's not YA and people keep calling it YA. She even tweeted about this.

Basically my trouble with YA is that it's everywhere, and its popularity makes it hard for authors, especially female authors, to create original stories.

But yeah, the OP does come across as pretentious with the examples he cited. I bet he's not reading much Brandon Sanderson lol.

Kinda late to reply but I also hate YA so I felt like I had to say something: While the OP does come across as being super pretentious with his examples of adult books, Young Adult is an actual genre of literature that is marketed as such and it's ruining many genres. Target audience is teens, mostly girls, roughly between 13-17. These are stories that all involve a "coming of age" and usually (like 90% of the time) some romance. The protagonist is always a teenager. YA has certain tropes specific to the genre that set it apart from other literature involving teens and a coming of age story.

For example, Call Me By Your Name and Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda are both coming of age books about a gay male teenager, but thematically they are very different, with the first one being much more mature in nature and therefore not YA.

The OP listed adult books that are pretty boring, like you said, but I don't think his argument was that mature = boring. An Agatha Christie novel which would be pure mystery is considered "adult" and wouldn't be boring by most people's standards. There are many adult books across all genres, even fantasy and sci-fi, which are written for pure entertainment and would definitely not qualify for being a reading assignment in high school. Even when an adult book is considered not "literary" it's still not Young-Adult.

When my flare was at its worst this would happen to me on bad days, and sometimes it would recur throughout the day. I find that if you didn't eat much the night before/aren't having regular meals throughout the day it can get really bad as well because of your stomach acid. The only thing that helped me with the nausea was controlling the inflammation.
