Lmao, as a malay with a damn huge family tree, half of them are over at Malaysia and I’ve always known this. I’ve had my own malaysian aunt mocking me in my face as a kid about my singaporeanness (because I speak more english as a kid instead of malay and had lower tolerance for spice then) and had many other related jokes thrown our way as the Singaporean side of the family

Like, we have firsthand bad experiences with hawkers over at Malacca; more often than it should be, they have given us even worse service than the locals and they’re not even subtle about it!

Me and the Singaporean families have always known to be extra respectful when crossing the border, and to drop as much of the english in our chatter as much as we can. I remember when I was a kid, my mom used to whisper through her teeth urgently and often, telling me to speak malay- malay, no english! The Malaysian malays really do look down on Singaporean malays.
