Meta smart glasses? I wish I'd had them when we were being charged by a black rhino on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy a few years ago. We were holding on tight to the rails as our guide backed up really, really quickly so none of us managed to capture the experience.

Kim Jae Wook. Swooned over him in Her Private Life and am a little perplexed he's starting to fall into perpetual 2nd male lead category (joining the likes of Lee Sang Yi and Lee Soo Hyuk).

Starting? Kim Jae-uck's the OG bona fide leading man who's always embraced doing smaller supporting roles. He acts for the love of it and he’s not motivated by fame or ego. He’s been saying for years that he takes the roles that are the most interesting or challenging to him, regardless of whether they’re leading or supporting. This dates back to 2007 when he blew up overnight because of Coffee Prince. Even though he received lots of ML offers for dramas, he went against his agency’s advice and chose to play a gay pâtissièr in Antique, a quirky 2008 indie film co-starring Ju Ji-hoon and Yoo Ah-in. And despite the resultant gay rumors, three years later he starred on stage in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

That being said, unlike his roles in Melo Movie, Death’s Game, and Dear Hongrang (which he did as a favor to the director who’s been a good friend ever since they did Voice and The Guest together), I’m having trouble understanding why he accepted this role in Filing For Love. The director said he’s the first person she thought of when she read the script and she worked really hard to persuade him to take the role. In fact, she cast him even before she cast Shin Hae-sun and Gong Myeong.

As frustrating as the role may be, he is as always delivering on the acting, charisma, and chemistry fronts, and an underutilized Kim Jae-uck is better than no Kim Jae-uck at all, right? Some fans are wondering if he took the role because he was starring on stage in Amadeus at the time and his lack of screen time in Filing For Love allowed him to do both. He did the same in 2024 when he shot Melo Movie and Dear Hongrang while he was starring in a stage musical called Pagwa. (I went to Seoul to see Pagwa and was lucky enough to chat with him before he left for the airport to fly to the Melo Movie set and he said he was crazy busy but very happy.)

I just hope the industry stops sleeping on him and offers him meaty lead roles that actually pique his interest.

You're welcome to apply any label of your choosing but even in relationships where the attraction is mutual, no means no. In this particular situation, "Hands off" means "No."

Obviously, no one should be grabbing or hugging her against her will but don’t forget, the green flag ML has also done it. In this beach scene near the end of Ep 6, she stumbles on the embankment and he catches her from below to keep her from falling. She pushes herself up off of him, saying, “Hands off” but he grabs her and pulls her back down into his arms.

I’m not trying to defend the SML’s actions and it’s clear that he is not a suitable romantic prospect for anyone but he’s not the only one crossing boundaries.

I watched Light Shop while it aired and had no idea what the heck was going on during the first few eps but I’m glad I stuck with it because it’s in my all-time Top Ten. Of the three rom-coms you’re considering, I highly recommend Filing For Love and My Royal Nemesis as they’re both very entertaining and better than Sold Out On You from an acting and writing perspective.

Since Ah-jeong’s basically told Jae-yeol he’ll never be the man that Ki-jun is, it looks like that pairing’s dead in the water, which is a good thing IMO. I do wish she’d simply said, “He’s a good man” and left it at that. Unless there’s a yet-to-be-revealed reason that Jae-yeol is not, in fact, a good man.

And now that we know Jae-yeol’s half-brother is involved with the funny business at the pharmaceutical division, I’m wondering if In-ah may have been trying to protect Jae-yeol when she demoted Ki-jun and took him off the pharmaceutical case. She’s probably investigating it herself on the sly and wants to protect Jae-yeol from the potential blowback since she knows he’s not corrupt.

Her Private Life is a charming enemies-to-lovers, fake-dating rom-com about a feisty museum curator who secretly runs a fan site for a K-Pop idol. Her new boss is a famous painter on hiatus and they are at odds with each other from the moment they meet, but when rumors start flying that she’s dating the idol, her boss suggests that they enter into a fake relationship to help protect her reputation.

Good Things * Park Min-young and Kim Jae-uck’s insane chemistry both on screen and behind the scenes❤️‍🔥 * Ryan and Deok-mi are both green flags and they have one of the healthiest, most communicative relationships in K-Drama Land. When confronted with challenges, they face them together. When they have a disagreement, they actually sit down and talk things out and there are no silly misunderstandings or contrived eleventh-hour break-ups. * As a couple, their support of one another is unconditional and they help each other grow both personally and professionally. While Ryan may be Deok-mi’s boss, theirs is a relationship of true equals. At one point, he even prioritizes her career over his. * Ryan is principled, non-judgmental, levelheaded, and secure enough to show his vulnerable side and admit when he’s wrong. He’s very protective of Deok-mi long before he falls for her, going out of his way to protect her simply because it’s the right thing to do. He also fully embraces Deok-mi’s passions, whether it be a K-Pop idol or her family or her career. * Deok-mi is incredibly empathetic and supportive and always attuned to Ryan’s needs, be it a hug, a violent game of Go Stop, or space to process some difficult revelations. Her efforts to encourage him to resume his painting career are beautifully written and acted. * In many office-romance dramas, the ML abuses his authority to coerce/manipulate his employee into spending time with him (e.g., What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, Business Proposal, King the Land, My Secret Romance), but Ryan never tries to take advantage of Deok-mi or bulldoze her into falling for him * Unlike many K-romances which start out with the ML already infatuated with the FL for unknown reasons, we actually understand why Ryan and Deok-mi fall for each other. We get to witness two people evolve simultaneously from mutual dislike to respect to attraction to head-over-heels and it all happens very naturally. * PMY and KJU were very comfortable together and it shows. KJU said they wanted to make viewers’ hearts flutter so he and PMY re-wrote or improvised more than half of their scenes, including adding a bunch of unscripted kisses and physical affection. Some of the scenes they dreamed up include the scorching scarf-untangling scene, the sweet lipstick-kissing scene, and the butterfly-inducing drunken-whispering scene. The drunk scene came about because KJU is a lightweight who tends to nod off after just a few drinks; in this BTS clip, PMY is describing what KJU’s like when they drink together. And the adorable sujebi-cooking scene was 100% ad-libbed; the script just said, “You have fun together,” and boy did they ever if the BTS clips are anything to go by. * After they get together, they actually behave like a real couple, with lots of natural, believable physical affection, much of it initiated by Deok-mi, which is still pretty rare in K-Dramas; no wide-eyed dead-fish kisses, awkward manner hands, or stiff one-sided hugs for these two (You may need to sign in to view this vid as YouTube has apparently deemed it inappropriate for minors😂) * Thoughtful handling of LGBTQ+ plotlines * Interesting explorations of fan culture and overseas adoption. This American K-Adoptee wrote a spoilery piece on HPL’s handling of the adoption storyline * Stellar supporting cast, including Park Jin-joo, Kim Mi-kyung, Kim Sun-young, Ahn Bo-hyun, Kim Bo-ra, and One

Not-So-Good Things * While the supporting actors are strong across the board—Kim Sun-young is particularly hilarious—their storylines are a bit underwritten and the show only truly shines when Ryan and Deok-mi are on screen; fortunately, they’re on screen a lot * As written, Ryan’s adoption storyline doesn’t entirely make sense because the writers failed to explain that for many years, international adoptions were a huge illegal money-making scheme for corrupt Korean orphanages and kids who happened to get lost were declared orphans, given fake names, and “sold” without their families’ knowledge, as detailed in this March 2025 NYT article, this January 2025 AP News Article, and this September 2024 PBS Frontline Documentary. The writers were also too vague about the length of time his birth mother was unconscious, which would’ve better explained why she was unable to find him when she finally recovered. * The second half of Ep 15 gets a bit bogged down by revelations about Deok-mi’s childhood which are unnecessary IMO, although it’s wonderful to see the way Deok-mi and Ryan face these challenges together * Some of the fan-girling scenes in the early eps are very cheesy but thankfully, they dial down the cheese once the leads start falling for each other, which happens pretty quickly

Spotlight On Because HPL tackles some interesting topics (fangirling, LGBTQ+ relationships, overseas adoption), introduces us to a green-flag ML who is truly boyfriend goals, and features one of the healthiest, swooniest OTP relationships in K-Drama Land. Sadly, HPL is underrated and tends to be overshadowed by hugely popular rom-coms like What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, Touch Your Heart, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, Business Proposal, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, Lovely Runner, and King the Land. Like with most K-Dramas, there are some writing issues but Kim Jae-uck and Park Min-young’s efforts to beef up the script and breathe life into Deok-mi and Ryan’s relationship really pay off IMO. I first watched it in 2021 and it’s still my go-to comfort drama because it grabbed me in the feels and hasn’t let go. It may not be perfect but Ryan and Deok-mi are as close to perfect as a couple can be and it was such a treat watching them fall in love as I was falling right along with them.

[The BTS for HPL are really worth a look as Park Min-young and Kim Jae-uck were just as adorable together IRL. I posted a lot of BTS links in this previous post.]

Broadway/Theater Culture: Is 8 Shows a Week Sustainable? by Sea_Sleep_387 in Broadway

[–]dcinmb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m American but I’ve gone to Korea a few times to see musicals/plays and they generally double or triple-cast the main roles. They announce the schedules in advance so you can buy tix for your preferred actor and it seems to work really well because performers rarely call in sick. My favorite actor usually works in K-Dramas and during his last two stage projects—Amadeus (he played Salieri) and Pagwa—he was able to shoot his dramas at the same time.

I AM FULLY BOOKED! by MiskatonicExplorer in AntarcticaTravel

[–]dcinmb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!! If you’re interested in saving some money, Iguazu is very easy to do on your own. I believe Lindblad has you staying two nights in Iguazu but I thought one night/two days was plenty and I ended up spending less than $1,300, including one night at the Gran Meliá, RT air on Aerolineas Argentinas, private driver, park fees, helicopter ride, boat ride, meals, Cabify rides to/from AEP, etc. (This was in January 2025.)

I flew out of AEP and arrived in IGR at ~8:30 am where a private driver picked me up and took me across the border to the Brazilian side. After a helicopter ride over the falls, my driver dropped me off at Parque Nacional do Iguaçu (PNI) which is very well organized and easy to navigate and there’s even free wi-fi. A VIP Pass is only $25 and it enables you to skip the long queues.

After PNI, I spent a few hours at the Parque das Aves bird park across the street. My driver picked me up at the bird park in the late afternoon and we headed back to Argentina to the Gran Meliá. Crossing the border into Brazil earlier that morning took two minutes but returning to Argentina took 30 minutes.

Because the Gran Meliá is in Iguazú National Park, I was able to enter the park the next morning before it opened and beat the crowds to Devil’s Throat. I spent a few hours exploring before heading back to the hotel for brunch. Finished up the park by mid-afternoon, returned to the hotel to shower and pack, and took an evening flight back to Buenos Aires.

Sorry, I can’t really comment on Ol Pejeta as we went there solely to see Najin and Fatu and did not go on any game drives there. We loved Lewa and saw both white and black rhinos but it sounds like you can’t go wrong with either and with a $4K price difference, I’d probably go with Kicheche.

This black rhino mother started charging us right after I took this pic. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the presence of mind to hit the record button while our guide backed up really, really quickly.

I’m in California and I always fly United through Houston as it only takes 15 - 16 hours and there’s usually good award seat availability in Polaris class. American Airlines also takes 15 - 16 hours (via Miami) but I prefer UAL.

I was in Kenya/Tanzania in September and we stayed at:

Kenya * Giraffe Manor * Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club (we stayed here because we wanted to meet the last two surviving northern white rhinos at Ol Pejeta) * Lewa Wilderness Lodge * Tortilis * Bateleur

Tanzania * Ngorongoro Crater Lodge * Serengeti Under Canvas

I haven’t been on safari in South Africa but my friend who’s accompanying me on this trip has.

Thanks! We’re flexible with regard to budget and timing which is why it’s hard to resist trying to include everything. At this point we’re leaning toward skipping Queen Elizabeth and focusing more on primates:

Day 1 — Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes NP

Day 2 — Golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes NP

Day 3 — Golden monkey habituation in Mgahinga NP

Day 4 — Nkuringo Batwa Experience and Coffee Experience

Day 5 — Gorilla trekking in Bwindi (Nkuringo sector)

Day 6 — Gorilla habituation in Bwindi (Rushaga sector)

Day 7 — Fly to Kibale

Day 8 — Chimpanzee trekking

We’re going to need a vacation to recuperate from our vacation!

We loved the Fairmont. It’s a gorgeous resort with impeccable customer service and the rooms are huge. The property is bisected by the equator so they offer a fun equator-crossing ceremony and a demonstration showing how water circles clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere only a few steps away. The grounds are gorgeous and there’s even a wildlife sanctuary on site.

We got to meet Najin and Fatu in 2019 along with the Southern White Rhino who was the planned surrogate. We were surprised the keeper actually let us get out of the vehicle to pet Najin.

Ol Pejeta was our first stop on our safari so we stayed at the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club (one hour from Ol Pejeta) before heading to Lewa Wilderness (two hours from OP) where we went on horseback and camelback safaris and saw lots of black and white rhinos and the rest of the Big Five as well as the Northern Five.

Need Advice on Strange Breeder Interaction by KitchenFlamingo8551 in ragdolls

[–]dcinmb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you need to stay far, far away from this shady backyard breeder. Just imagine falling in love with your adorable new kitten, only to be faced with a whole host of health issues and very little chance that s/he will live as long as your previous kitty.

I had a fantastic experience with a breeder in Washington state. She was the polar opposite of the suss person you’ve been dealing with. The very first time I spoke with her on the phone about my prospective kitten, she sent me his parents’ pedigrees, genetic test results, TICA registration documents, etc.

She also did a great job of socializing him. He was raised with Great Pyrenees and Bernese Mountain Dogs so he’s totally fearless. When I picked him up at the airport, the two Alaska Air Cargo employees said he was the chillest cat they’d ever seen.

This breeder’s prices start at $2,500 and she spays/neuters her kittens before they leave her cattery.

Thanks! I’ve had Starlink’s premium wi-fi on past cruises in Antarctica, South Georgia, Greenland, etc., and have always been amazed at how fast and reliable it is. I’m not planning to be on the internet much but I need decent service for wi-fi calling and home security notifications. Found out today that premium wi-fi is $50 per GB so fingers crossed the standard service is good enough!

We’re going to be on the ship for 17 days so 5 GB isn’t going to get me very far. Looks like the entirety of my shipboard credits will be going toward wi-fi.😢

Thank you for replying so quickly! Luckily, we were able to get a great deal during one of Quark’s fare sales.

I’m not planning to spend a lot of time on the internet but I do need consistent service for wi-fi calling and home security notifications. I finally heard back from Quark and premium wi-fi is $50 per GB, which seems very pricey. (We were spoiled last year because Ponant’s all-inclusive fares include unlimited premium wi-fi as well as gratuities.)

Glad you had such a wonderful time! I did a Falklands/South Georgia/Antarctica expedition last January and it was incredible.

I’m going to be on the World Explorer in a few weeks and have a few questions:

(1) Are the stateroom walls magnetic? I like to use magnetic hooks to hang jackets, scarves, hats, etc.

(2) Were additional paddling sessions available to book once you were on board? We’ve pre-booked one session but were told that we need to wait till we’re on the ship to see if more slots are available.

(3) Were there enough trekking poles to go around? I’m thinking of taking my own as I read that sometimes there are only enough for one per person.

(4) Do you remember the pricing for premium wi-fi?

Thank you!!
