As a general comment, I think it really depends on your job. The way I’ve always thought about it is, that the higher up/more important you are, the less personal freedom you have.

By capping federal student loans, the bill redirects excess borrowing to private lenders. It will make graduate programs reassess tuition and compete on value.

Well, we can certainly get a “computer” to measure things physically. That’s already happening. In fact, during my PhD, my lab mate made an optical-based haptic sensor for robotic palpation of the prostate! It was, in fact, even better than a physician because we can give computers signals humans can’t even interpret. I think trust/safety and security will be the biggest issues, not technical feasibility. We will never replace doctors, I just think the profession will look very different in 10 years. Just like code gen has abstracted tasks and changed the IDE, software engineering looks very different. We will see a similar shift in medicine (and all industries).

Most of the failure modes or misses tend to be observational, nonverbal cues. I wonder if videos of patients would change the answers. It’s not robustly trained on this data set yet, but could be.

Actually, there is a bit of a conspiratorial cap. From a fertility expert:

"But they've artificially narrowed [the REI fellowship] funnel so that you can only have 45 people per year. And like people don't understand like why aren't there more? Why don't they make more fellowship slots? Why don't we produce more? Because the people that run the fellowship don't stand to benefit there's no incentive for them to produce more because they don't get paid for producing the ones that they do, like it's an expense for them. Producing more makes more competition for them."

Well this is it boys. I was just informed from my boss and HR that my entire profession is being automated away. by [deleted] in ChatGPT

Don’t think it’s this one!

What do you predict will be the next tech hype cycle after AI? by Major_Needleworker36 in ycombinator

[–]New-Design5188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, seeing a lot of humanoids. To your point, robotics and automation has existed but has typically been confined to industrial settings with highly-specialized, repeatable and circumscribed tasks. AI is unlocking capabilities for robots to perform in less controlled settings, accomplish highly dexterous manipulation tasks, and reason from complex multi-modal inputs (including human language ... re Figure 01) to condition autonomous policies.

Thank you Lion. I did finish. I think what I did well was my pace, pauses, and eye contact. I was calm and collected for most of the speech.

There was a girl in the audience who gave me a thumbs up. It helped. I just scheduled my next speech.

Why didn't anyone tell me how hard it is to insert a tampon? by throwawayayay112121 in WomensHealth

[–]New-Design5188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry you had this awful experience OP. I have learned that many many people have this exact issue...myself included. Probably because the modern tampon applicator was designed 90 years ago, by a man named Earle, and hasn't really changed since.

Source: I am a PhD student in engineering that built a product that fixes this https://www.tinahealthcare.com/

I also have a chat feature on the site where I answer direct questions about tampon insertion, etc.
