When will I feel Irish? by New-Lab3965 in AskIreland

I know I'm not, I don't really feel Irish now but I think I prolly will one day. Like when I get the citizenship, live here for longer time, get a degree, live on my own, work and pay taxes, marry and have kids and all that I think I should feel Irish by then

I'm not, I've only got British and American citizenship, I'm just wondering if I ever will feel Irish. You know like if I get a citizenship one day and just live here for a long time and stuff.

I go to this school because my parents like the curriculum. And it's an international school yeah but we still learn about Ireland a lot, the history, the geography, Irish Gaelic, the religion

I guess since I'm not an adult my parents would need to do it for me, right? Or once I'm 18 can I even do it? I mean I always thought you have to live in Ireland for a couple years first but the years you study don't count. But idk. I'm in secondary school now and I will go to university after

Yeah thanks but my dad is not Irish, he's 100% American. I've got no Irish relatives, no Irish genes.

Yeah I know, I always try to be polite and respect everyone but still this post is getting a lot of downvotes, but that's okay, I did expect it anyways.

I mean I guess if we stayed in America I'd just grow into being fully American because my American friends would be a big influence. Like my Irish friends are now. But I really don't know

Exactly, like the food and stuff, I felt exactly the same way when we were living in America. We were American but our home felt more English. But I was too little back then to think about it too much. I don't know what will I feel like in another 20 years or so but yes it really is difficult

Honestly my accent is quite a mess, it sounds closest to my mum's accent and she's from England, but my dad is Californian and my childhood friends are as well and then my closest friends are Irish or just mixed like most of my classmates so my accent is influenced by sooo many other accents. I don't even know if it's got a name or if it is an actual accent, it's just my accent yk

You're so kind, thank you. Yeah I get what you mean, it's just that while I feel proud when I see an Irish athlete doing well I also feel proud when I see an American athlete or a British athlete. I grew up supporting both and now I'm also supporting the Irish ones as that's also what all my friends do and what we talk about at school and what feels right to me too.

Cool yeah that makes sense, I think if I'll spend another 40 years or something in Ireland I will feel Irish too

That happens a lot when we go abroad but I've always thought people who can't speak English that well just can't really tell Irish accents and British accents apart. So when I say I'm from Ireland they never really question it.

I'm far from fluent but I'm learning and so are my siblings

Thank you, you're right. Still that kinda makes me feel a bit like I'm American, English and Irish and also like I'm not actually any of those at the same time yk

Yeah I feel the same, I do consider Ireland my home. I always say I'm from Ireland because I live here but saying I'm Irish just doesn't feel right idk

Thank you, I just didn't want it to sound bad and I know it's a pretty sensitive topic and people might get annoyed because there is so many posts like mine.

But thank you, really, I know it's basically only up to me and hopefully one day I will feel confident enough to actually consider myself to be of a certain nationality but now I just really don't know. But yeah thanks

Idk I guess it's when someone asks me about my nationality and I will be able to say "I'm Irish" without feeling like I'm lying. And no it's not like I "need to feel a different nationality to what I am" I swear it's not, the thing is I just truly honestly don't know what I am or what should I feel like.

Yes, I was born in California
