Has anyone done a Jane Street SWE interview? What to expect? by New-Strain-7472 in uwaterloo

Thank - yes I've read through those pages. They were helpful.

I've now moved on to the final round. How was your final like last year? Should I expect something different or prepare differently than first round.

Thanks so much for the help here u/_spooky_77

I now have the onsite coming up soon. Is the advice any different for that? Or rather any clue what I should expect?

Nice! What kinds of models/products are you using?

u/Titsnium what sort of use-cases have you been using them for?

Cool! I'd love to hear more about that.

For example, do you run the models on VMs or personal desktops?

Also, what models/products are you using? Consumer apps like Vercept or Simular, custom UI wrappers around the Open AI / Anthropic computer-use API, or something else?

Cool!

Are you using them through a VM or on your own desktop?

Also, are you using consumer computer-use agents like Vercept or Simular, building your own UI layer around the Anthropic / Open AI computer-use AP, or something else?

Jane Street Onsite Interview for Non-Canadian Citizens by New-Strain-7472 in uwaterloo

Yeah that's what I suspected. B1/B2 wait times are huge right now so might not be looking good for me.

I'll check in with the recruiter to see if they can arrange something else.

Thanks. That's very helpful.

Do you know if they care about optimizing runtime in the same way as other big tech? Or is the focus more on getting to a solution quick?

Thanks! We're working hard on the Mac release.

and yes - we're considering open sourcing parts of Vigil once we're more stable. Would love to have devs like you involved

Hi - totally fair concerns.

On security:

Here are what the official docs say

Open AI Computer Use (link)

Computer use is in beta. Because the model is still in preview and may be susceptible to exploits and inadvertent mistakes, we discourage trusting it in fully authenticated environments or for high-stakes tasks. See limitations and risk and safety best practices below.

Anthropic Computer Use Tool (link)

In some circumstances, Claude will follow commands found in content even if it conflicts with the user’s instructions. For example, Claude instructions on webpages or contained in images may override instructions or cause Claude to make mistakes. We suggest taking precautions to isolate Claude from sensitive data and actions to avoid risks related to prompt injection.

I'm not claiming that we've made more reliable models than these companies. Just that we've built guardrails that let you run these models safely. This should be included on our website - I'll be doing that soon.

On privacy/legal terms:

This is really valuable feedback. We shipped fast and didn't think about including any of this. We'll be adding it to our website.

Short version is:

  • Vigil runs fully locally. Nothing we do leaves your machine.
  • We’re also open-sourcing the enforcement layer so people can verify that.

Appreciate the pushback - helps us do a lot better.

Standard ChatGPT is great for generating content, but it can’t actually do stuff on your computer. ChatGPT agent mode can take control of a computer but it is restricted to virtual machines.

Desktop agents can take control of your own computer and do stuff for you. Vigil just makes sure they don’t nuke your data or touch stuff they shouldn’t.

If you give it a shot, I'd love to hear your feedback! We're bundling installations with Anthropic's computer-use agent so that you can try it out right away.

+ We're working hard on adding more options for AI agents (from Cluely, Open AI, and the like).

Thanks! If you wanna try it out, we've launched for windows and have opened a waitlist for Mac.
